74 F250 steering column replacement

Looking for a replacement for the steering column in my 74 F250 supercab. Shift linkage broke and my mechanic said the whole column is bad. He doesn't deal much with classic vehicles and hasn't had any luck finding a replacement. Anyone know of a good source or if a later model column would be interchangeable? Thanks for any help/suggestions

I'm not sure I understand. I'm not a mechanic of any sort. The shift linkage went out because the tube inside the column had rotted away. When my mechanic tried to fix ut he said the whole column was bad and needed to be replaced. It is anon tilt column for an automatic

Yea, didn’t know if it was an automatic or standard column. I have a automatic column I had in my 73 That is a good one. Only reason I am getting rid of it is do to putting in a tilt. Pm me if interested.

The tube cannot "rot away." I suggest you find another mechanic, this guy is giving you a "song and dance" because he doesn't know how to repair it.

Replacing it with another used column: It may not be any better than what you have now, it might be worse.

There are nylon bushings on either end of the shift rod that attaches to the selector lever on the column, then to the transmission lever.

This bushing is available from Ford and is the usual cause for problems with a loose fitting shift rod, because they crack apart/disintegrate.

EOSZ-7341-B (replaced C8OZ-7341-A, C9TZ-7341-A & EOSZ-7341-A) .. Shift Rod Bushing - Upper & Lower are the same / Available from Ford
