Does anyone have a completely "chirp-free" 5.4 3v running around. How did you get the chirping to go away. It is most annoying on wet/raining days, or with 5:00 a.m. morning dew starts. It goes away after a few miles. I was working on an unrelated job on my engine and decide to change out the belt and pulleys to stop the belt-chirp. It got better, but not perfectly quiet. I cleaned pulleys with isopropanol alcohol before installing. Any other suggestions?
Use an industrial spray bottle that sprays more of a stream than a mist full of water. Turn engine on and spray on each pulley. The noise should change or stop with the water. That will point you in the right area on what to clean or replace.
If your belt and all idler/tensioner pullies are known good, then chances are it is one of the accessories. Could be (as pointed out above) a dry bearing in the alternator or A/C compressor, possibly the power steering pump.
My guess would be on the water pump, these tend to chirp a bit since they are a smooth pulley, and if a bearing is starting to go bad then the pulley no longer runs true.
There is also the possibility that the belt is not routed properly. My dad had a truck that lost a pulley while on a road trip, and the idiot at the auto parts store swapped it for him and put the belt on wrong. It was only barely touching the crank pulley, and would squeal like a wh*re until the belt caught up. I glanced at it, then at his belt routing diagram, and changed the belt for him - squeal gone.
If anyone wants to revive idlers I posted bearing part numbers here. I think it's kinda unfortunate we don't use more steel idlers and just press out/in bearings when they die.
