6.2 vs 6.4

Anyone know how Chrysler’s 6.4 compares to Fords 6.2?

No clue, but ran a fleet of 5.7's from 2006 through 2015. Garbage! Everyone of them had valve train issues centered around lifter/cam failures. If the 6.4 has the same valve train...hard pass.

we have some 6.4 in our fleet and theyve done very well. the entire trucks has done very well if you want the truth. theyre around 100k with many thousands of hours idle time.
vehicle longevity or lack there of can largely be traced back to the drivers/owners. if you beat it into the ground no truck will last long

One engine is made in Michigan, the other made in Mexico. After seeing the blight of Midwestern towns, I've made my decision.

When I was shopping for a HD truck in 2017, I compared all of the Big Three. The RAM's 6.4 turned me off for at least three reasons.
  1. Recommended 89 octane fuel
  2. Odd (at the time) 0w40 oil
  3. Multi Displacement System (MDS) system
From the Owner's Manual.

Both of my 6.2 Ford have ran WAY better on 89 octane. Granted 87 cheapo bulk station gas is fine on an empty road trip down the highway.

I've had both and agree with what the videos show. I also live in CO and drive the mountain passes frequently. The 6.2L was way better towing in the hills than the 6.4L.

I didn’t include whatever hunk of junk HD engine GM puts in its hunk of junk trucks.
No offence to anyone that owns GM junk.

Look on Youtube at the Gauntlet pulls of the 6.2 versus the 6.4. 6.2 blows the 6.4 away.

But that was before Ram started putting the 8 speed ZF transmission behind the 6.4. By all accounts the ZF transmission really improves the 6.4 towing experience.

The 89 recommended vs. 87 octane is a little overblown IMO. Our 7.3 trucks, per the owners manual say that 7.3 s designed to run on 87 "but for *best* overall vehicle performance , premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended." (pg 179). So to get the best performance in the 6.4 you run 89, in the 7.3 you run 91.

The big thing for me when I was cross shopping HD gassers last year was MDS. My 19 1500 5.7 had MDS, and while not intrusive, it sounded like I had an exhaust leak when engaged along with a resonance. The 7.3 has no MDS and no auto stop-start...yet.

Having MDS on a HD truck would be a deal breaker for me but have lots of friends driving Rams 6.4 without complaint.

So Ford designed their new motor to run best on the most expensive gas?
