I NEED HELP FINDING A RING AND PINION GEAR FOR MY 1955 FORD F500. IT HAS A TIMKEN C100 REAR AXLE WITH A 6.8 GEAR RATIO. ARE THERE OTHER AXLES OUT THERE THAT ARE SIMILAR TO THESE AXLES, OR IS THIS SOMETHING THAT IM GOING TO HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING.DEBATING ON WHETHER TO WITH THE TIMKEN OR JUST UPGRADE TO A NEWER REAR AXLE.
I’ll leave it to others that may have knowledge of replacement ring and pinion options for your axle. If you elect to look for a replacement axle one that has been found to be a good swap is the Dana 70HD from 1970s/80s Dodge or Ford Class A motor homes. These axles generally have a 4.56/1 final drive ratio and share your truck’s 5 lug x 8” hub bolt pattern. There have been a number of past discussions of this option that you might do a Google search about. To my recall spring perch spacing, etc, is close to a stock Ford medium duty. These axles are fairly common in yards that recycle old motor homes. I also have one I’d part with. Stu
The 5 lug rear axle from a dodge chassis RV is perfect solution. I actually sold one to a friend that had 4:88 gears in it. The pig bolted right in to the axle in the truck, so he didn't have to swap the whole axle. Big difference in road speed except on a hill. Truck can still sniff a hill 500ft away and he has to drop a gear. That 292 is working pretty hard.
I sold one of these to a guy years ago that iirc had a 54 F-500. I should have kept track of him to see how it went. But lost his contact info. I heard from another guy with a Studebaker who was making the same swap. Below is a pic of the axle I sold, and the one the Studebaker guy was prepping for his truck. Stu
