So last night when we got home, put the 86 in park and the key would not turn. Tried the jiggling multi-attempt with a reading from the book of curse, but no joy. Finally just manhandled it to off. Going to pop off the covers this afternoon and have a look. What type of carnage should I expect? There was no preindicator of failure. The shifter moves smoothly. Is this just classic column lock actuator failure?
To see if it's the actuator, get the key back in and try to start it. If it will not crank over but all the lights and buzzers work when you turn the key, it's the actuator.
Well, going to name this truck Houdini. Took the steering wheel off to investigate, and only found broken pad studs. 5/16-24 x 3 inch for the steering wheel puller if anyone is interested. Probably a little easier if you get the 3.25 inch. Not in the standard Lisle kit btw. Nothing to indicate shifting issues. And operation has returned to normal. Now I'm thinking loose linkage finding a bind point. Have to get under it to verify. Rain locally is getting in the way.
Symptoms:
Shift indicator was way off towards the P side and ignition stuck in On even in Park. Ignition would not turn until I forced it.
Investigation:
Nothing looks out of place in column and afer yanking steering wheel, motion as normal. This can be unrelated. Still thinking loose linkage finding a bind point.
More as I get there.

This is a long shot, but have you tried squirting some WD40 in the key cylinder and then moving the key in and out to lube up the tumblers?
Many moons ago I had a key lock tumbler problem and WD40 was actually the solution.
