key lock

Hello Folks, I'm having a problem with my 91 F150 5.8 extended cab short bed. After starting the motor if you let go of the key lock letting it return to the run position the motor dies. If you hold the key lock over towards the start position it will stay running. I have used a couple of rubber bands looped around the top of the key lock down to the emergency flasher switch and it is just enough pressure to keep it running. Today I replaced the key lock and that wasn't any help. Anybody experience this and have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks

Since you replaced the ignition cylinder, perhaps you noticed that there is no spring in the lock. The ignition switch has the spring the returns the rod and lock cylinder from start to run.

Maybe it is just me but when I saw the title “Key lock” I assumed you were going to be asking about a door lock.

I guess I have my terminology wrong. I've never had the 'ignition cylinder' act like this. From your reply it sounds like its the 'ignition switch', is that a part that the steering wheel has to be pulled to get at? Or maybe the covers around the ignition cylinder cover on the steering column? Thanks for your reply!

I would look at the lock actuator rod and the switch. Both are on the column in the dash. They are also both known to fail.

sounds like the ignition switch is bad Glenn.
it is on top of the column roughly above the brake pedal.
switch is made of metal and plastic. over time the switch separates between the two pieces, causing the exact issue you have.

i have replaced over 100 of them.
this one is ebay for $18.75 plus $3.55 shipping.
parts store switch is usually around $15
