NP435 question

I am just completing my installation of the NOVAK Industries kit for my np435 out of 1979 F250 4x4.
One question I had is; what keeps the trans oil from filling up the adapter. I know the My NP205 Transfer case has a input shaft seal but no adapter to tf case gasket. just the 6 bolts.
I just changed all seals and gaskets in the 205 while it was out.
when I tore the 435 down there was very little oil in the adapter.
Just seems like there should be a seal in the output shaft of the 435 also. I was just wondering for my own info.
I think the 2x has a seal in the adapter before the yoke.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with your application but often the adapter has a double seal with one going each direction.

Hopefully your Novak kit works better than mine. if your stop ring assemblies are good I'd highly recommend you reuse them and not install the made in India junk ones in the kit.

I had my kit installed by a well respected transmission mechanic and it shifted awful. I pulled it out and he went through it looking for the problem and it still shifted like crap. so I found a good used transmission and it's great. I'm going to watch for a set of NOS syncro's and if I find them see if they fix the problem on the rebuilt NP435. it shifted fine before the rebuild I regret touching it.

Hey 440,, Thanks for the reply.
That was the reason for my question, There were no seals in the adapter.
Yea, as for the kit, the shift pins for the stick were missing, called and was told they cant get them any more??
They seem to know nothing about the 205. I was surprised.
Back in the early 80's I used them for an adapter kit to install a 68 302 Z motor which I built and had a Minci 4spd, and Novak adapter which changed the output shaft in the munci so it would mount up to my 77 CJ5 Jeep Trans fer case.
Worked Very well with all that power.. (Very fast by the way) That is why I used their kit.........Guess things change???????
Sorry for the long reply...
Anyway thanks again for your answer.

Maybe on that adapter there aren't seals. they both use the same oil so i suppose if the levels are roughly the same it wouldn't matter. seems unlikely they'd do it that way though, maybe someone has a shop manual that covers it.

Novak sold out and they're not what they used to be, neither are their parts. some of that you can't blame on them though it's hard to get good parts for this old iron it's almost all import junk.

Nothing prevents oil into the adapter. Oil transfer down the main shaft is what lubes the spline into the 205. Seal around the 205 input to keep fluid in the 205. There is a very small lip in the adapter that the oil will run back into the trans after if it fills a little

Little more clarification there is a double seal on the 205 input inside the aluminum housing. Keeps oil in and trans oil in adapter out. Pic can see the recess for the main shaft output bearing. The bore of adapter is level. Oil will drain back thru the bearing

Thru that bearing

And call jesse or chris at off road design for anything 205 related.
I just had to source the np435 main from novak
and 205 input from off road design.
my splines were trashed

Thank you for the clarification.
I just put all new seals and gaskets in the 205 and knew the TF case oil was staying in the TF case, Just did not know why the adapter would not fill up or even leak since there is no gasket on the TF case end of the adapter like on the trans end which has the gasket.
Like going up steep hills or such. As stated in the original post, I did notice when I took it apart, there was not much oil in the adapter.
Thank you all for your input..
When something does not make sense to me I usually ask..

There is a gasket on the adaptor that mates to the 205

Stupid question, but does the NP435 have a neutral centering spring like a modern manual? I notice mine kind of flops around in neutral. The ball retainer isn't damaged.

No, you have to overcome a little spring pressure into reverse but that's all.

None of the older pickup transmissions that I'd driven have any centering, and real truck transmissions never do.
