Oil change

The oil minder % on the truck must keep track as every 1000 miles as 10% or atleast mine was. The mileage was 8,284 and the minder was showing below 20%. On tbe 2012 it had a choice of what % it would remind you and 100% was equal to 7,000 miles but it seems that 100% on these trucks is 10,000 miles. This truck is only 100% as a chioce.

From the owners manual...

10,000 miles seems like a lot. I guess I'll use 70% on the oil minder or 7,000 miles like the past truck.

The oil monitor uses several data points to estimate the oil change interval. It uses a combination of miles, time, idling hours, towing vs not towing and maybe others. My last oil change I was at 3,500 miles and my Oil Monitor was down to 32% remaining, at that rate it would have been down to 0% at 5,150 miles (3500/(1-.32)). Most of my 3,500 miles was towing with a considerable amount of idling and it was over 9 months. From other threads, some people said they changed the oil before storing the truck for 6 months and when they returned it was showing 50% which is inline with the manual of 10,000 miles or 12 months. I am okay with the way it monitors the usage because I am one of those people that changes the oil myself more often than required, cheap insurance at roughly $30 per oil change.

Thanks for the info maybe I'll give it a couple of full runs on the monitor but to be honest all I thought about prior to this oil change was it's past 7,000 mile and needs a oil change.

The oil still had good color though.

It used to be that the diesel had a more intelligent oil minder I believe that had several data points. The gas wasn't that smart.

If I am right about the past, had the situation changed? Does the 7.3 have a "smart" monitor?

Anyone else need more oil than the OM calls for to get to the top of the hash marks?

OM says 7.5L (8 quarts)

Ive done two oil changes now and it took 8L (8.5 quarts).

Im not concerned, just curious if others have the same experience.

Yes, mine is the same way but I just dump 8 quarts in and call it a day.

the middle of the hash marks is the normal level using the proper amount of oil called for, or at least it always has been with my last two Ford trucks.
Putting in an extra half of a litre won’t hurt anything.

8.5 quarts on my 7.3 also. This puts oil level right at the max on the dipstick. Lots of oil in this motor.

Thanks for all the replies.

I put this question up on a 7.3L bookface group and had about a dozen replies stating the same, that their 7.3 takes 8.5 quarts(8L) also so seems that’s the norm.

Makes it easy as I will just dump 8.5 quarts in and go moving forward.

Finally did some longer runs and I do believe your oil monitor is time and mileage based.
Initial oil change at about 4300 miles, down to 65%
Alot of normal driving and few highways tripsJust did 2600 mile trip boondocking pulling 5vr, 75% oil life.
Doesn't seem to take into account engine load.
I settled on 5000 mile oil changes since it's not a daily driver and usually towing when I do use it (less than once a week). Oil is cheap.

Odd how long they try and stretch oil changes on new engines, do work for one fleet and they run b model Cummins to 30,00 mile oil changes, in service book it's longest service recommendation, but oil comes out chunky and clings better than tar. I'm sure they will crater a motor but they try and sell them before it happens.

Yeah, 10K oil changes make me a little nervous too but it seems that is where manufacturers are heading. Our car is 10K intervals and it is doing just fine. The manufacturer says that more frequent changes are a waste of natural resources.

97-98% of used oil can be recycled so I disagree with whoever this manufacture is.

I change the oil in all my vehicles at 5k regardless of what the monitors or the manufacturers say. I grew up with my dad preaching 3,000 mile oil changes back in the day. He was religious about keeping that schedule and I am now with the 5K routine. I consider it cheap insurance...

No more then my 2017 5.0L Coyote, I was surprised when I heard it was only 8 quarts for the new 7.3L, but it’s nice they kept it that low, better then the 10-12 quarts that diesels take.

The oil interval readout calculates your percentage reduction based on driving conditions from the resource I read. It takes into account somehow and I don’t know how if you drive in dusty conditions and the type of driving you do. Who knows…..maybe it does have the intelligent monitor. I have always been a 5k proponent. I will stay that way too.
