My 1998 E350 van now has a whopping 112k miles on it. I use it to tow my two horses and recently had them in the trailer while going up a dirt driveway with a pretty tight left turn. Along the turn I lost footing and slipped a bit. In the past I have considered converting to 4X4 to have a safer vehicle to tow and as many of you know it's not cheap to do. I have found a trusty fabricator who can do the work and has mentioned the conversion will raise the value of the vehicle. I am here asking your thoughts on theses types of conversions and do you recommend it?
It will be a fairly expensive undertaking, but I'm sure it's been done before so if it's worth it to you to retrofit your van rather than buy a 4x4 replacement I say go for it. You'll need to have your transmission converted or replaced with 4x4 unit. Transfer case, driveshafts front and rear, a way to control the transfer case, possibly a pcm if you want electronic tranfer case, and of course the front differential with gears that match the rear plus all the steering and suspension to go with it. Damn sounds like a lot when you type it all out like that. All it take is money though right.
All the parts will be OEM Ford, same as F series 4X4. Lots of labor but parts should be plentiful and reasonable. Several popular retail conversions out there, like Quigley.
