Anyone know what aluminum radiator I can get that will be a drop in replacement for the original on a 1963 Econoline? I took a longer trip this past weekend and boy did my van get hot. I ended up having to have the heater on to lower the temp enough to not overheat. I have a fan I can add to push air though the radiator so I guess I can install that first and see if that does the trick. Has anyone swapped their radiator, and how much of a difference did it make?
Mustang radiators will fit, but the brackets are backward. Some have bought Mustang radiators and have a radiator shop remove the brackets and put them on backwards. Or you can just make spacers to make them work. The Mustang 170/200 six engine radiator is what you need assuming your 1963 has the original 144/170 engine.
Have you taken your radiator to a radiator shop to see if they can flush it out or rod it out? A good radiator shop can rebuild your existing radiator cheaper than buying an aluminum one..
The aluminum radiators cannot be fixed if they leak. You have to replace it.
Do you have a belly pan and/or fan shroud? The belly pan forces cooler air into the radiator. When you are stopped, it keeps the hot air that is exiting the radiator from entering the front of the radiator.
The fan shroud helps to force air through the entire surface area of the radiator.
Is there a fan shroud available somewhere? I can see how that would help. I do have the belly pan.
Would a four row radiator do a better job cooling? I've seen some of those on ebay. I'm sure I could put in some spacers to make it fit with the mounting bracket backwards.
Four rows will typically cool better than three rows.
The radiator designed for the 240 (Econoline) and V8 (Mustang) is a little taller and will thus cool better. The bottom hose location is on the other side, but you can make a hose/pipe combination work.
I have seen fan shrouds being reproduced every now and then, but do not know who is making them now.
Some have had success with a Taurus or Volvo fan shroud. Take your measurements to the auto salvage yard and start measuring.
Besides the belly pan, ensure you have something in place to keep the air from moving over the radiator. A piece of inner tube attached to the doghouse lid is popular.
