Where do I find the casting numbers on my 1980 F350 400 head? The info I have found online showed numbers between rockers. I dont have any numbers in this location. The heads are mounted and intake is installed.
Look at the casting date. If someone switched to an early set of heads the casting number is on the underside of the intake runner and can't be seen without taking the manifold off.
I think it was the original Cleveland heads that have the number underneath. Don't think there was any difference in rockers. Valve stems, rotators and such may vary..
Look at the top corners of the head right outside the valve cover. If someone swapped a set of 4 barrel Cleveland heads there will be a little number "4" on the two top corners.. If there is a dot by the 4 it is an open chamber 4 barrel head. No dot means the super desirable closed chamber head. No number means the head common to 351M and 400s. 2 barrel heads had a "2" and are functional equivalents of the Modified heads.

You can leave the valve covers on.

Most of that is true most of the time. But the 4 bbl. heads can be either way. I've seen open chamber heads without a dot and closed chamber head with a dot. It just seems to be whatever the foundry worker did that week. I have a set of 4 bbl closed chamber heads on my truck, cast about 1 month apart one has a dot one doesn't.
