Axle ratio

I have a 2002 Ford Excursion 7.3, I have factory 3.73 gear with stock tire 265/75R16.

I looking to getting better fuel mileage thinking of changing the rear gear to 3.42 or 3.55.

I don’t do much towing maybe twice per year with 5000lb max what can I expect mileage change ?

Is it worth doing.

If not towing most of the time I doubt you will realize any gains. The cost of install vs MPG reward just isn't there. Even less likely if your Ex is 4X4 as the cost to re-ring is double.

If you have the parts for free and do all the work yourself you might come out ahead.

For best MPG I'd focus on tire diameter.

Also a big factor for a stock unmolested truck is the up pipes. The OEM design wears over time and loses boost, which kills MPG and HP. If your uppies are OEM I bet your best ROI is in upgrading to bellowed uppies.

Thanks for your advise. I have done the up-pipe kit and 4” exhaust several years ago, plus I running Hydra Chip 80hp Daily Driver the rear end is starting to make a little whirring noise so I’m going to have to change it at some point that the only reason I’m thinking about it. 65% of my driving is highway/expressway what size tire would you suggest?

Here is a link to a gear ratio calculator. You can play around with different ratios and tire sizes for your desired rpm. Might help you figure out a good combination.

If you don't go off road, an air dam under the front bumper to block air from going under your vehicle might be the most effective way to improve your gas mileage. This is particularly true if you spend a lot of time at highway speeds. An air dam that goes from the bumper down to as close to the road without getting dinged to smithereens is best.
