2008 F250 5.4ltr 4x4. If a mechanic takes off the oil pan can he inspect the rods ? I have a knock and not sure where it is coming from but it is loud and it comes and goes and when I hear it I park it shut it off and restart and it's gone. If I keep leaving it running its loud and scary?
Yes they could, however the labor rate for oil pan removal is half of the labor of engine removal. I suggest pricing out a reman long block with R&R.
I agree and you'll be prepared for what might come to be.
I myself would first attach a real oil pressure gauge to the oil filter adapter "rail" and determine if that pressure is within specification. You don't mention current mileage which might be helpful. If these intermittent noises are that scary you may very well be facing eventual engine replacement. Tough to hear I know but I had a 5.4 with barely 143K miles develop a severely low hot idle oil pressure of 8 PSI against a recommended minimum of 25 PSI---anything is possible.
ok that is great info and suggestions, I need to find someone who can do that and mileage is 220k kilometeres and so was the fix u had to replace the oil pump?

If you're asking me I simply replaced the entire engine--main reason being I had no idea nor real interest in determining the extent of possible bearing damage. I didn't disassemble the removed engine, again nothing to do after discovering the extremely low hot idle OP.
I was first alerted there was a potential issue with OP as the silly instrument cluster light, sound and sudden sinking needle sensed OP was not being maintained. Knowing the factory gauge and sensor are nothing more than on/off switches that trigger at about 7 PSI I suspected a defective sensor and/or wiring issue. Replaced the sensor and exact same issue with audible and visual warnings of low OP.
