I would not move the engine. That is your reference to get it close to back in time. Get a flashlight and look down in the hole, you should see the shaft sticking up. If you don't, look for it laying off to the side. They sometimes come out and fall into the oil pan.
If you see it, take a socket and tape it to an extension or several extensions, and slip it down on there and turn it just a tiny bit and try again. Just tape everything together so you don't lose anything in the engine.
To add to the above post...If you haven't turned the engine any, the distributor should go back in without any problem IF you are replacing it with the rotor facing exactly as it was when it cleared the cam teeth, which is not the same place as when the distributor was seated into the engine. The rotor will move as the distributor is lifted out. Noting where that is is how to make sure you don't install one tooth off.
Update... just had to turn the engine a hair to get the dist to drop in. Got all the parts replaced. Ended up banging my head against the wall cause I had set dist 180* off. It did create a backfire so loud I was pretty sure cops were going to show up lol 😂
Finally got it started and was able to dial in the timing and it runs great again. In the end it was just an odd coincidence that it was overheating at the same time. Now I just have to find the cause. Appreciate all the help from the community!
