Wire connectors

what type of connectors are these ? How do I take them apart and put the wires into replacements? I’m redoing the wiring without buying a 1k pre made harness

Sorry I can't help with the name. I've seen it in print before, but it's seldom mentioned and I've long forgotten. But my go-to is still the Weatherpack because they're readily available in both kit form and as individual pieces with different pins (male and female) for different ranges of wire gauge, and with housings of anywhere from 1-pin type, all the way to 30-pin type (rare, but kind of handy now and then) with the most common being the 2-pin to 6-pin probably.
If I have an 8-pin factory connector I'd just use two 4-pin Weatherpacks.

It's not for everyone I realize, and definitely not for a restoration. But they work great, are easy to pull apart and remove the wires from, and they're very weather-resistant to boot.
If you couldn't tell, I'm a big fan of them even if they are a GM kind of thing.
As with so many other items, the GM stuff has become ubiquitous in the aftermarket and they are used in all sorts of situations. To the point that they're hardly identified by their GM origins anymore.

Lift the tabs on the side and pull the 2 halves apart, may be stuck pretty good. On the sides of halves will be a small red arrow shape that you need to push in a bit.. I use the sharp point on test lap probe and wiggle it under the red locking bar raising it up until you can pull the lock strip up and out with needle nose pliers. Each connector will have a locking strip that you just pry slightly towards the center where the red locking strip was and pull the wire out of the block from the backside. These are really easy to work on, but only work with the Ford terminals. I've been fortunate to find replacements in salvage yards on many models of Ford products from the 70's to the 90's. Be aware there many types that look the same and have same wire count but will only match with proper mating connector due to indexing tabs.

Thank you for the input. What gauge connectors would I need if I went with the weatherpack or similar product?

I'd have to look it up, but I think you can use 12 to 16 gauge in one size, and that covers most of your re-wire needs. The next size down probably handles 16 to 22 maybe? Sorry I'm just SWAG'ing now. I did buy a selection, but don't remember it being too much trouble for most of my needs.
I have only used 10ga in one or two of them so far, so don't remember any pitfalls. However, for factory wiring there are only a limited number of 10ga wires to begin with (usually the larger Black w/yellow power wires for one) and most of those do not have disconnect setups. Just terminations like ring connectors, so if reusing stock wires you can probably get by with 90% of one size fitting. The outer casings remain the same for all normal gauge sizes. Just the internal male and female pins change, along with the size/color of the cavity seals.
Again, I don't know this, but my guess would be that most circuits on our trucks use 16 and 18 gauge wires. There are several 14ga wires too of course, but the majority are probably just a size or two smaller.

A set of these will get the pins out of most anything.

The connectors are Motorcraft WPT numbers. Obsolete and 99% are no longer available as NOS parts. Junkyards are your best bet, but it will take a lot of hunting to find ones in better shape than yours most likely.

I just purchased the single wire version of the male half that looks similar to the connector on the right, #WPT 648 was the part number. Got lucky and my local Ford dealer found two of them as NOS parts at a Ford Dealer in Iowa, last two in existence. Cost me $60 for the pair. So even if you were able to find ALL the connectors on your harness as new, the cost would be staggering.

Here is the PDF showing all the Motorcraft WPT numbers. They are listed by the number of wires/connectors...so just scroll down to the section you are looking for. when you find the one you want, try calling your local Ford dealer and have him check availability. Just don't be surprised if they says it's no longer available anywhere.

Haha!
Which ones? Factory Ford stuff, or the Weatherpacks?
If Weatherpack, they separate easily enough initially, but if you want to remove a wire from the assembly, you need a special tool to accomplish that.
