Front diff removal
I’m trying to do an oil pan gasket replacement and have got the cross member and sway bar out of the way but I can get the top bolt on drivers side of the diff out. Steering linkage is in the way no matter where I turn the wheels. Am I forgetting a step?

Not sure what year truck you have but on my 2003 expy (4wd) I had to disconnect the bottom bolt from the intermediate drive shaft that connects to the steering rack and move it to the side. once you move it you will have enough room to pull the bolt out. Also, I found it easier to remove this bolt from above the engine, just remove the air filter and intake hose. I am tall so i was able to reach down and use an extension to get the bolt off. Since you will already be in that area to remove the drive shaft bolt you can do it all at the same time. I have attached the section from the workshop manual for my truck. Just want to reiterate that this is applicable to the 2003. Hope this helps.

one other thing, on my truck the housing that holds the oil filter is attached to the engine separate from the oil pan and when I pulled down my differential i found that the oil filter housing gasket was leaking oil as well. With the differential out you may want to check to make sure that it is not leaking.
