Hey all! I'm looking for some guidance on the navigation system upgrade in the 13-16 super duty's. Does anyone know if it's possible/has been done to retrofit a double din, floating display head unit? I'm want to put a Kenwood DMX1057XR in my truck, and don't know what's required. Here's a link to the head unit. https://www.kenwood.com/usa/car/excelon/dmx1057xr/
I know I can upgrade to the Sync 3 in the 17+'s, but for the money I'd rather get the bigger screen and some other cool features like multiple camera hookups. Is there a trim kit that modifies the opening for a double din? Seems kind of backwards to go from a big screen to a smaller one, I'm hoping someone made one with floating screens in mind.

Reason: 13-16's, not 11
I installed a Kenwood DNR1007XR, which is the same radio your looking at but has the Garmin Nav built in, in my 2012 F350 XLT. Used a standard Metra trim kit and it worked out well. There's enough adjustment on the screen so it doesn't stick above the dash or cover the HVAC controls. Head to Crutchfield and they will list what you need in addition to the radio. For reference I purchased the following;
The idatalink controller is necessary to keep the steering wheel controls functional and the harness let me keep the factory aux in and usb ports working, in fact it let's SYNC function as it did from the factory. I actually don't ever use SYNC as Android Auto is so much better but the harness was only 30 bucks.
Hi Wess23! Thanks for the information. My truck is a '16 with the factory SYNC 2 Nav and the 8" screen. I thought along the same lines as what you did: grab a dash kit, use a maestro RR for integration, and I'd be off to the races. Crutchfield doesn't have the Kenwood, or any similiar, listed as compatible though with the factory nav version of the truck. They say it will work with the non-nav version, which leads me to believe it's only a dash kit issue with the 8" screen. hardware wise I'm think I can reuse the factory mounting brackets or fab something up to install it, and just figure out a dash kit that will cover up the reduction from 8" to double din.
I spoke with one of the installers at Crutchfield who said there is likely a difference in functionality with the nav and non nav components of the truck, ie. some components are missing on the nav version that the Kenwood would need to make it functional. I have zero idea if this is true or not. Doesn't seem like it would be, but who knows. Their website also says Sirius XM doesn't integrate with the Kenwood. Did it work in your install?
I'm not averse to buying it and seeing what I can do to make it work, though I'd like to get some insight if anyone has walked this path before
That setup just for the Kenwood DMX1057XR is $1250.00 plus all the other stuff mentioned, I did the sync 2 to sync 3.4 with Apple Car Play and Android Auto for $900.00 (Amazon). I love it, works perfect but if your harts set on the other, your going to spend a lot plus the time to do it. Good luck.
Hi Gyppo! Yeah, I was looking at the Sync 3.4. It seems like it would work pretty well. I really like the sound quality from the Kenwood, but the primary reason I'm buying it is for the 4 camera inputs. I'm pulling a 5th wheel and would like as many cameras as I can. My other option is going with a dedicated tablet, which can handle more inputs, but also much more cost.
I can't help you with the differences between the trucks with and without factory navigation, my truck had the standard radio package in it. I'm surprised to hear that Crutchfield says a XM module won't work, they listed one as an option when I purchased mine and the radio has the XM icon built in. I actually have XM in another vehicle and that subscription includes online streaming which I run through the Android Auto app in the truck so I elected not to purchase it. If you have a good cell data plan this works great as it saves another monthly XM bill.
I like it, it took 20 min to swap everything out and didn't have any issues. It took the GPS about 24 hours to sync up but everything worked, seat cooling, heating ,AC and the dual climate zones. To me it sounds really good but I'm in my sixty's, I listen to Blue Grass, Cajun and Zydeco, top 40 Alternative and Classic Rock. My son drives it all the time and loves the Apple car play. I read in some of the reviews the seller could remote in through your phone via an app and fix different issues others were having. So ya, I think it sounds great but it's still pretty much stock.
Yeah, the info they were giving me didn't make much sense. I can't see there being different modules, would make building them more complex than necessary. I'm really thinking it's just not having a trim kit, and nobody trying it yet. I'm cool with being the guinea pig!
Thanks Gyppo I do like the ease of install factor. I haven't played with the 3.4 so I don't have anything to compare it to vs the 2.0 and the kenwood. I've started looking at mounted tablet solutions for the cameras as well, in the event that's the route I end up taking.
Who did you buy yours through? I've seen prices from $600-1,800.
I'm pretty sure there's a spot on the back of the APIM module for the front grill blue oval camera. Infotainment.com has an excellent installation video for the 2013-2016 Super Duty
I think I figured out the hardware issue. Look at the difference in placement on the nav vs no nav. The double din opening top lines up with the top of the AC vents. The nav screen only covers half the din area, the rest is taken up by the cd player. It looks like that extra space behind the screen is taken up by a speaker as well, so there wouldn't be a way to make room for the kenwood unless the speaker was removed and the plastic munched out. There are a few floating screen single din units that may work, but they don't have the extra camera inputs, which is one of the main reasons I wanted it. Looks like I'll be going with the sync 3 upgrade and figure out something else for the cameras. Thanks all for your help!
