I'm painting my coupe before it hits the road . The ford truck code rr is very close to the current candy on the car with allot less complexity . This is for 1 quart of dupont waterborne . I will probably need 3 plus the primers ,sealer and clear . As the title says ouch .
There would be a mixing fee but buying an extra quart would be allot more . A couple of summers ago I was looking for a suitable touch up paint and found this color to be extremely close . This is a factory candy with a tinted midcoat but in the alternate mixes there is one that does not have the tinted midcoat . It probably won't have quite the pop but will be much better for matching-painting panels seperately . I quite honestly didn't think it would be that much so I ordered 1 quart to try and make sure it was what I wanted . But now it's what I am going to use .
Paint has gotten crazy expensive, I priced a gallon kit of "nothing special" factory pack white Nason fulthane last week to spray a dock box and a few other things around the house, $275. Then I went into my paint cabinet and poured all my leftover whites together and used that for my project. I don't know exactly what color it is other than White and that's all I wanted.
I don't know how they justify paint prices these days. I think the simply the price mark-ups are a big contributor to it. It used to be about $60 dollars would buy a gallon of Lacquer, Acrylic Enamel, or Urethane paints. I will say red colors were, and are sill always a little more expensive.
The paint companies charge as much as they do for their products, because they can, like most any other business. In fact it's easier for them than other businesses or industries because the cost of their products is paid for, for the most part, by third parties, your insurance company. The body shop buys the paint and passes the cost to the insurance company for reimbursement. The next time you ask why your car insurance premium went up 15% over last year, there's part of it. The paint companies really couldn't care less about us, the hobbyist. In the grand scheme of things we don't amount to much of their clientele.
