Hi Ford Truck enthusiasts,

I wonder what the part on the image (red rectangle, cap and tube) is called. The engine ist a FE 352 brought to 390 with a Thunderbird 4-barrel intake.

Thanks in advance and hope to see you on the road,
Joachim

That is the oil fill tube and breather...
Mostly used on engines with out valve cover holes...

Oh well, thanks a lot. Seems that there are at least three breather caps. Anyone with an idea, of the right set up / combination of breather caps? The ones on the valve covers have PCV valves. But the cap on the filler is quite old and it seems that the engine vacuum is not that good.

You have two PCV valves in the valve covers. You only need one. That is where your vacuum is going. Replace one of those with a breather type cap, like the one on the intake, except made to fit into the valve cover.

The intake is from a 1964 or older engine. There is either a draft tube on the rear, or an open hole. Either way, I would plug that hole. You can cap off, or remove the tube on the front, and plug it off if you want, or leave it there since it's filtered. If there is no draft tube on the rear, you are getting unfiltered air into the engine.

yardbird nailed it. I have the same setup just as he described.

All tight, thanks a lot yardbird and RKDxpress, I will work it over and change the set up. At the moment I have the two PCV on the valve covers and another one inserted at the rear end of the intake, connected to the carb.
So I will close the one on the rear and, change one valve cover breather cap, use only one breather with an PCV.

thanks a lot,
Joachim

That should make a big difference in vacuum.

I have the same intake and I removed the tube and plugged the hole with a freeze plug; 1.5" IIRC. You need to run the left rear vacuum hose only to the carb base, then get a breather (filtered) for the drivers side. That's where you fill the oil.
