I think what bluetorpedo85 was saying is that the 300 will drink a lot of gas, just like a 460. Which is a 100% true, although, I believe it would still be less.
Bottom line is, a 300 is a great motor to do it with, will last a long time, however, for more $$$ there are still options with more power, but the 300 isn't a bad choice as it sits.
a 4bbl, 10:1 compression, an RV cam, headers & duals will make some definate power.
Makes good points there pckupman, I wasn't sure if he had the np 4 speed or not, trust me man I've got one in my truck and absolutely love it, with 4.10 rears . Talk about pulling a house down. Makes sense, with the right gears that thing should do alright pulling wise. I'm just used to my dads dump with a diesel and four speed, and it's geared lighter in the rear than my 250.

Heck yeah! I too have the NP435 4 speed in both of my trucks. It is definately the best tranny for that motor. When I put my 84 down in low range and pop it into granny gear, it's just like a tractor. I only have 3.08 gears and I still can't break 7 mph! After I installed the locker in the rear, it's like a tank...you can't stop it! My 77 has 4.10s, I have'nt had any time to play with it but I can only imagine the possibilties! He has a good motor/trans combo, he just needs to play with the motor a bit. It will make power with the right mods.
