Mobil is rated Mercon. Amsoil is rated Mercon and Mercon V. Mercon V not rec omended, however lots of people use it and have no trouble. Schafers oil is also used but I have no knowledge of it.

You can buy Mobil 1 at any auto parts store for around $5/qt.
You can't get Amsoil or Schaeffers for that, and no one has ever produced a single document written by an independent source that demonstrates that anything is better than Mobil 1.
If I were you, I would buy the cheapest tranny fluid you can find. I found some at walmart for 4.17 a gallon. The fluid gets dirty just as fast. Just change it more often. I have never had a slush box fail me on the cheap stuff 250,000 miles on my C6 and still shifting as new. I change mine every 15,000 miles however.
I also am getting ready to change the trans fluid, probably this weekend. This is the first time on this truck. I don't really want to pay $5/qt x 20qts. If I go with a Dino trans fluid what exactly do I need? How is Mercon different from Dexron III? Is that just a Ford label? I would like to buy this at Wal Mart or auto parts store and don't necessarily want to go for the cheapest stuff, but not the most expensive either.

MERCON is Ford's trademark for its tranny fluid. DEXRON is GM's trademark for its tranny fluid. Ford sets the specs for Mercon, GM for Dexron. They could be the same, for all I know. Most tranny fluids are dual rated Mercon/Dexronn III and those are OK to use in the 4R100. Dual rated MERCON/MERCON V are specifically NOT to used in the 4R100 per Ford.
If the fluid is MERCON-rated, then it meets Ford's specs and it will work just fine. If you are going to go dino, just get the best deal that you can. House brand is just peachy (like c_rossman said), but if it makes you feel more comforable to buy the name brand, go ahead, just don't pay too much extra for it.
