Paint Gun Comparisons

I'm seriously looking at upgrading from my 30 year old paint guns to something new. The primer gun will likely be a SATA, but the finish gun I'm not decided on yet. I'm looking at the Sata 2000 Digital 2, the DeVilbiss GFG670, or the Iwata LPH100LVG. The Sata is said to be the "best" overall HVLP, while the DeVilbiss comes with several nozzles, and though not a true HVLP, is said to be workable at lower pressures, and saves a similar amount of paint. The Iwata has the unique feature of a side mount cup that allows vertical spraying .... great for under the body painting when you don't have a body rotator system. The questions I have are: Do any of these exist in members' shops? How are they working? Best source for a good buy? Are there better choices? I can't get a local company to allow try outs and only one of the models (Sata) listed is in use locally, so am hoping for some good info here. Thanks in advance.

I have the DeVilbiss 670 'plus' gun and love it. I know there are several good guns on the market, but I can't imagine any one of them being able to lay down a smoother finish than the 'plus' gun. It has the bag system using the heavy-duty zip-lock bags and with them you can spray with the gun held in the upside down position.

I can't remember where I got the gun, (search on the net) but you may want to check with www.autobodystore.com I know they have carried them.

Aekisu, a regular here, (with a wealth of knowledge on bodywork/painting) mentioned in one of his posts a few day ago, that he knew of a location where you could get a very good deal on a Sarta gun.

DeVilbiss 670

Tom,

Thanks for the info on the 670. What size nozzle are you using ... I understand that the 670 comes with three. Also what pressure is it able to work at best? Finally what about overspray.... is it as thrifty on overspray as the better HVLP guns? I like the idea of the bag system for overhead spray work. The Iwata has that rotating cup gizmo, but I can just see me whacking that cup on something and have the whole thing flop over and dump all that pricey batch of urethane on the floor.

Thanks again,

The DeVilbiss comes with three nozzles and I used the middle nozzle to begin with and have felt no need to change on the single stage. It has been a little while since I used it, but the best I remember I set the pressure between 35-40 pounds at the gun with the trigger pulled and I played with the adjustments until I got the fan pattern like I wanted. It realy was pretty easy to do.

If you go to the DeVilbiss web site you will see that the 670 has now been approved in about 95% of the country as HVLP compliant meening a transfer rate of 65% or better.

Tom,

Thanks for your additional comments. Looks like the 670 is the way to go. I even found a "wholesale" source for the unit, and my wife is springing for an early "Christmas" present. She always complains that I'm hard to find gifts for, so this gun is really working out nicely. I just have to figure out which primer gun is really best now. Maybe an additional larger tip for the 670 would be a good idea, and a lot cheaper too. I had thought that the Sata primer gun would be good, but I'm thinking it might be more pricey than it is worth. Still looking..............

Thanks once again.
