Reader's Rue

It’s that time of year when leaves begin to fall, carried away by gentle, cool winds. It is this time that I miss an old friend. Even though I never met him, I was drawn to him by his novels. We emailed back and forth a few times and he even invited me to his “rendezvous” in Montana. But he died a couple of years ago (March 2001) and has left me and others at a loss of what to read and who to read due to his extensive research and attention to detail that kept us glued to his books. His name: Terry C. Johnston. His best novels (IMO) was the Carry the Wind trilogy, where he sent a man called Titus Bass off from his home in Kentucky to the Rocky Mountains to be a mountain man. And a grand journey it was. I found myself reading his books well past midnight, only to awake at 2 or 3 in the morning with a book on my chest and my glasses saddled to the bridge of my nose.
I have, since then, tried to find a comparable author, but no luck so far. There is one man, Charles Frazier, (Cold Mountain), who follows in some of the tracks and is worthy of my praise, but is really no comparison.

My question is: Have any of you ever read Terry and found an author that carries on the tradition in like manner?

I didn't know that he died!! Yes, his trilogy that you posted of was excellent! Some of his writing got kind of long winded, but his research on that trilogy was remarkable. I live in northwest Montana and when Titus traveled up through this area in the story, I could visualize all the areas here where he was since I have been through the areas very frequently.

Another writer that I enjoy is William Johnstone. He has written some very good fiction that was researched very well. I will see if I can find the names of one series that I read every one of the stories. I think you may enjoy his writing also.

Where in Montana did Terry live? Probably eastern Mt, but thats just my guess.

Billings.

Here is some info for you:http://www.geocities.com/rondy1840/aterry.htm

Kind of scary how he wrote off Ol' Scratch and then died himself.

You know, I guess Terry got mad at Josiah or something (or got angry at the man he took Josiah's character from) and just let him fade out - in style.

I was hoping Titus and Josiah would sort of just fade off over the mountain somewhere like Jeremiah Johnson.

Sure wish they would make a movie of Carry the Wind.

BTW - the Cold Mountain movie will be out in December. I hope its as good as the book - but they never are.

Well, western movies are making a slow comeback...perhaps mountainman movies will also do a bit of a comeback. I agree...the Carry the Wind Trilogy would be a good set of three movies if done with the accuracy that was done on the Lonesome Dove movies. They followed the books to the letter. I doubt they would be big moneymakers though, since providing accuracy from the books is very costly and makes for long movies.

I think it would be great for people to learn more about the history of the mountain man..men who knew the tribes better than most. Terry never over golorified the tribes, but portrayed them more like they really were. Perhaps political correctness would be a staggering factor in making a good book based movie. I'll have to watch Cold Mountain and then read the book, since that's one I haven't read.
