Post Trip rant

Question:. Why is Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois gas awful? On my round trip to Vegas and back to move our eldest back from the chair force (his words), the gas in these 3 states was the worst tanks. I averaged 2-3 mpg less at the same speeds. My average pulling my 23 foot trailer was 11 mpg.

My guess is its not awful gas but more ethanol as a percentage in the gas. More ethanol content reduces fuel mileage.

As others have mentioned, we're still on winter blend. It has a higher vapor pressure and slightly lower energy content. It's cheaper for the refineries to manufacture, so they produce these blends as late into the season as the government allows.

Michigan and indiana were not bad, missouri, arkansas, oklahoma, texas, arizona, new Mexico, nevada, colorado were good, just those 3 were so much lower.

That's pretty good observation on your part and would make me wonder why just those States would be using " winter blend ".

know nothing about fuel regulations for each state but do travel quite a bit and have yet to see ethanol higher than 10% but rather up to 10 % per label.

Those 3 states especially Neb and Iowa grow lots of corn. Meaning lots of ethanol.

Do you think it was higher then 10%? Most states had it labeled 10%. I have read it would be bad for my 7.3 if it was higher.

I'm sure it was not more than stated. But probably maxed available as per law! Comment was just an observation that the three states you mentioned are corn producers. Iowa and Nebraska THE top ethanol producers in the US.

Higher ethanol content would also be my guess.

I believe they can go as high as 15% ethanol in regular gas ..
But they should note that on the pump ..

If you fueled up with 88 octane that was the cheapest gas, it was probably the 15% ethanol blend. Many places around these parts carry the 87, 88, 89 and then the premium fuels. Premium is a crapshoot whether you get an ethanol blend or not. 87 is the 10%, 88 is the 15% and the 89 is the non ethanol blend. 88 is usually about. $.05 cheaper then the others. I am skipping E85 because had you fueled up with that, your truck would have ran like crap being a non flex fuel.
