Polish or Clearcoat?

I

I have a 2015 F250 with the exact wheels shown here. One was damaged so I bought a used replacement online that isn’t as good in person as I expected. It came from FL and I suspect that the salt air attacked the finish.

I’m trying to determine if the wheel is clearcoated or not? On the link I attached, that company lists the finish as “polished” while other wheels on their website say “clearcoated”. This makes me wonder if my original wheels came from Ford without clearcoat?

Does anybody know for sure? I’ve looked all over my wheel and can’t see any evidence of a clearcoat, unlike other OEM wheels where it is plainly obvious when they get a few years on them.

Bottom line, can I simply polish this wheel or does it have a clearcoat that I need to strip?

Thanks!

Rub some White Diamond aluminum polish on it and if it turns black, its raw aluminum, if not, its clear coated.

it was most likely clear coated from factory, but someone removed the clear coat and polished it due to salt corrosion eating the clearcoat and rim.

Once you polish an aluminum wheel...or any aluminum for that matter...it will turn dull in due time, which will need another polish to get it back to a shiny condition. If you don't want the aluminum to turn, then a protective coating must be applied. I have a set of one year only 2004 18" wheels I picked up that need to have the factory clear coat removed, a touch up polish, then a protective coating applied. I've been researching things from ceramic coatings, powder coating, and clear coating. I've come to the conclusion that Alumaclear or Cerakote may be the best option for a DIY project or having a painter spray a 2K clear coat.

I just bought four used wheels and there’s some scratching on them. I’m trying to decide if I should ignore them or give a light buff.

The scuffs on these won't buff out with the Meguiars cleaner and wax. What year are you putting those on?
