Trade Value

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone would have some input on what they think a fair trade in value and a fair direct sale value would be for my truck. I am looking at upgrading to an F550 from my 450. It is a 2020 7.3 Crew Cab 179" wheelbase 4x4 4.88s XL trim 12,500 miles in pretty much like new condition. 16500 gvwr with snow plow prep package, XL value package. It has a CM aluminum skirted flatbed. I was offered 40k on trade for it and wanted to know if that is fair. I think it sounds about right depending on the deal on the new truck but obviously would like to get every dollar I can. Thank you for any input!

Get quotes from Carvana, Vroom, KBB Cash offer, Autonation, Carmax if there is one near you and see how it compares. Depending on the state you are in don't forget to take into account the tax credit you may get trading in as well.

Okay I will try that. I have never done any of those cash offer things before so I will give it a go.

I usually use the KBB trade in value as my starting point. The newer and better condition my truck, the more I may lean toward the "excellent" condition rating, but I find most dealers will only offer you the "good" condition value. I find that if I offer the dealer something that is fair and not unreasonably swayed in my favor, the more likely I am to get the deal, realizing I may be leaving a little money on the table. But a few hundred bucks is worth it to me to have a great relationship with my local dealer for service and future sales.

So KBB does not have an option for Chassis cab or for the 7.3 so that wont work I dont think

Our dealer uses kbb.com. I ordered truck in December. Trade value on My 2019 F250 was 49k to 53k. Now its 54k to 59k 3 months later. Wish new truck would get here so I can trade it, lol. Don't want to see it start dropping.

So KBB, Carvana, Carmax, and NADA are all strikeouts when it comes to getting a trade in value or offer. Chassis Cabs are out of their forte apparently

Well that's a hefty loss, but it's expected. Vocational trucks are hard to sell and they never do good on trade at a typical dealership. I would check truck trader for current value.

Yeah it is more of a loss than I want to take, but I thought it might not be as bad at that given the high used car value. Strictly vocational trucks can be hard to sell but a skirted flatbed truck I would think would be on the lesser end of that. I wish this dealer was closer but the dealer I usually work with does not deal with larger trucks than a 250 usually so I would be looking at ordering a truck from them and I would prefer not to order a truck. Oh well

I had good values from Edmund's when I purchased (no trade) for my '18 and for an added source to this thread.

So I still have not heard back from Vroom and Autonation even though it said the application was successful. I will take a look at edmunds. Thank you

Commercial trucks are not covered in consumer vehicle value estimates because it is impossible to know, index, or even comprehend the number and type of upfits that are fitted to chassis cabs. Some second unit body and equipment upfits cost a quarter million dollars. The last body I ordered cost only $25,000. That's a 10 fold difference in cost for a bed on the back of the same F-550 chassis cab. By contrast, a pickup is a completed vehicle and a known entity.

The elephant in the room here is that you want to trade a 7.3L Gas 10 speed for a 6.7L diesel 10 speed, where both vehicles have the same deep 4.88 gear. The questions that arise out of this are numerous, but in the hopes that many of those questions may be accidentally answered along the way, let's just start with the simplest question...

Why?

Looks like we're getting into the inflation numbers last seen back in 2008-2009. After Cash for Clunkers, used car prices went up 100% in certain price ranges. I owned a used car lot then. Not fun at all.

So the 550 I am looking at has 4.10s and I am looking to be traveling more than I used to since my career changed. I am planning to buy a large 5th wheel camper and travel with it. My 450 would do the job but the fuel economy would be horrible and not do near as well in the mountains where I will be going through. The tow capacity of a 450 6.7 would do me just fine but I just like the way 550 rolls off the tongue haha.
