So I'm gearing up to change the oil for the first time in my, new to me, 2017 F250 6.7L Super Duty. I'm thinking I'm going to use the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40, or maybe the 15W-40. I'm trying to figure out if I meet "Severe Duty" by Ford's definition. I don't meet most of the bullet points except for maybe pulling. I pull a travel trailer that probably maxes out around 10,000 lbs about 5-6 times a year. My manual simply says "Towing a trailer over 1000 mi (1600 km)." It's pretty common for me to use a smaller utility trailer to haul miscellaneous things (tractor, lumber, building supplies, etc) and while the winters don't get that cold here in southwest Michigan anymore, we do usually hit some sub-zero temps in January or February for a week or two. But that 1000 mile thing . . .
Anybody know if Ford means 1000 miles between oil changes, 1000 miles at a time (i.e. an individual trip somewhere), 1000 miles a year . . .?
what would the resulting new oil XWY be with 5W40 and what would the new XWY be with 15W40.
there have been cases of spun bearings and other lube related mishaps with the 6.7.
generally speaking....until you do some oil sampling ....city folks tend to have more interrupted regens than non city folks and the more time your truck spends trying to do regens ...the more fuel is being sprayed into your cylinders and washing down the oil.
my oil levels always rise, my fuel dilution is high....in NYC we drive 1 block...then we idle for 3 minutes waiting for the light to turn green....then we repeat this at the next intersection a few blocks away.
in an ideal perfect world 5W40 should be fine.....but.
Going with the T6 5W-40. I live in a rural area so most of my driving is 55. Just curious about what Ford means by 1000 miles. I'm not losing sleep over it. Just wondering if any of you knew.
T6 is a really well regarded oil and I run it in most of my vehicles and equipment. For something like this it's probably worth the expense even if you're not truly pushing the change intevals.

My interpretation is 1000 miles between oil changes.
It is kinda vague but I agree with the post above. If you tow a total of 1000 mi. or more between oil changes then you would follow the severe service intervals.
I’ll bet money that hotshot pullers go 10k on oil changes while pulling every mile. They likely go by the manual, too.
Most on 10w30 also, that's all we service the fleet trucks with and there hasn't been any issues. These trucks don't tow but most have unladen weights above 18k.
T6 5w40 is a waste if you follow the OLM and never start below 10 degrees.
The T4 15w40 is more than adequate for whatever you could put the truck through unless you experience Arctic temps.
All that being said, you going with 5w40 is fine, and will cover you well. Just no need for the extra expense.
I follow 10K intervals. In the winter I don’t tow at all. In the summer I can put 4-5,000 miles on towing a 16,500 lb 5th wheel during a oil change interval.
Use a high quality oil and 10k intervals, or when your oil change monitor tells you to change it, and you should be fine.
I analyze all my oil changes and never see much of a difference. Not enough to worry about anything.
