Hi, from Central Idaho. Just drug home my 58 F100 short bed step side. At present, it has a 460/C6 installed, which turns freely at the crank with a wrench. Other than the drivetrain swap, the truck is essentially stock, with the exception of a set of vintage SS Cragar's with 'recent' radials installed. Not had good experience in the past with non-power steering half tons and radials, and doubt this will be an exception.
Not looking to have a show truck, just a fun rig to putt around with, so, the 460 may not stick around. Thinking more along the lines of a 2V 351W, or even perhaps a 240 or 300 cid six. P/S would be nice, as would discs. Where I live, a heater is a must, but for a/c, we roll the windows down.
Also in the stable is my Dad's old 67 F100 4x4, in pretty bad shape mechanically, 93 F250 4x4, and 04 Super Duty V10 4X4. Also got some GM stuff, but I've about had all of that "great GM feeling" that I can handle for the rest of my life.
Also, at least 3 CJ's, a 49, 62, and 76. They seem to multiply in spite of sitting in the pasture unattended...
Photos to follow shortly, as soon as I find the charger for my camera.
Welcome and glad your here! Keep us updated on your plans and progress. Pics are awesome when you can. I like your idea of gaining better fuel economy so you can drive it more with the same amount of fuel!
While I had the front up on jackstands, I gave the kingpins a shake, and they're in good shape, as are the steering linkages. A bit of slop in the steering box, but, the truck is.....63 years old. Hell, it's only four years younger than me, and I'm wore out!
I gave the USAF 30 years, and in that time, I didn't find any other place that suits me as well as where I grew up. Well, I could move back to Wyoming in about two shakes of a lamb's tail! Where else could I go to step out and bust coyotes off the back porch?
Tried to get shots of the engine and installation. Installation is a hack job and will have to be redone entirely for safety and usefulness, if I keep the 460. Previous owner installed an Edelbrock Performer 460 on it, but left the 4300 carb on it. Cylinder heads are D3VE's. Not the best, not the worst. I'll sling a battery in it after I get it off the trailer, and run compression and leak down as soon as the weather permits.
