Air cleaner question

I know it’s been touched on before digging through here but couldn’t find the part numbers that were listed. I have a 78 with the inline 6. It has the factory air cleaner but is missing the tube and I think a couple other necessary parts. I know the local parts stores have tons of “performance” air cleaners for 2bbl/4bbl, but what can I replace mine with? Also I think I might take the black extension off, seeing as there’s a gap to the filter anyways. Also, can I just replace the oil filler cap with something else seeing as a filter would remove that connection?

JMO but I would leave it as is. You can add the heat stove tube back, if you have cold weather starting issues.

The oil cap to air cleaner housing is part of the PCV system. That's where the clean air is drawn into the crankcase. If you remove your filter housing, you need to provide for another way to get clean air into the crankcase.

Open element performance air cleaners offer little more than more noise for most engines. Yours included.

If you do swap to one of those, you either need to search one out for your small sized carb, or get an adapter.

You can also run some flex from the air cleaner horn to the core support area for cooler air for your carb. If there is already a hole there that is high enough to avoid water ingestion.

Easy enough! I thought parts were hard to come by with the factory stuff, but I would rather leave it as is if there won't be any difference between this and a different air cleaner. Much appreciated!

They make breather filter oil caps. They're cheap. May have to add breather element to your search terms for oil fill caps.
