clutch switch removal

on my 88 f-150, i found the switch finally just trying to get it off. according to the haynes manual it has two clips and it comes apart, wrong. i am about to crush it with pliers. i have a new switch, i just want to know what went wrong with the old one. the previous owner bypassed it poorly. so it would start in gear, not safe, help

There should be a white clip that goes over the top and snaps into place. You remove that and then the switch can be pulled off of the clutch shaft.

Take a picture and show us what you're working with. Might be easier to draw some arrows or something to help you out.
