Trans questions

1. Torque converter- I was reading about a test that if you drive at 40 mph do you want it to lock up or not lock up by tapping the brakes and looking at the tach. Which one do you want it to do.

2 went for a long drive yesterday. First time I drove it that far... I noticed atf fluid was dripping out near the front of the transmission is this overheating or a bad front seal.
2a. Would having a trans cooler installed fix this?.
3. Would not having of engaged cause atf fluid to overheat and cause it to drip?

I have to install a new radiator replacing with a heavier duty one.i ordered..

Thanks shane

It's a bad converter seal caused by periodic overheating. The OEM seal is gray and it is junk. When you replace it, use a blue or black seal.

It's too late for that now.

I have no clue what you are trying to say here.

Meant to say overdrive

Was doing some investigating and noticed a cooler was already installed in front of the radiator. I drove it some more today and no leaks seems like only long distance caused it

Tapping the brake pedal will cause the converter clutch to disengage.

Are you sure that is not the AC radiator?

Torque converter lock up does not happen in first gear.
When you are driving at say 40mph, steady, and tap the brake, you should see RPM rise a couple hundred and drop again.
When driving steady, at say 40, your torque converter is 'locked up', when you tap the brakes, it 'unlocks', then locks again.

So I did that and I didn't see the rpm go up when I tapped the brakes...I'll try again tomorrow

What truck, engine, trans, this is all assuming, you dont have a C6 automatic transmission, which doesnt have OD, and therefore cant unlock torque converter, when you tap the brake pedal.

Yep. C6 = No overdrive and no lockup torque converter.

If your doing 50mph, steady with gas on a little, then with left foot, tap the brake pedal, and your rpms go up and then down, then yes, a good thing.
If your off the gas, you will not notice a change, and is also normal behaviour.

This means your Brake On/Off(BOO) system in the EEC and the Torque converter clutch and Lock-up Solenoid are working as designed.
