2003 5.4l 2v 170,000 misfire, skipped timing?! Wtf
So other day I was driving the lower RPMs and all of a sudden my vehicle 5.4 L two valve expedition made it kind of rough I don’t know if it was a pop or some type of noise and then started running extremely rough. I have checked all the spark plugs all were seated good there’s no oil around the stems of them spark plug wires are good . I have not run a code reader on it yet but was told that it perhaps skip time or that the tensioners or phasers or old and worn in so it’s skipped time on his self therefore needing a new valve job as well as timing kit there is the little dominant noise out of the intake which again I was told that it was probably the timing but before I decide to either fix it or part it if like someone else’s opinion. Prior to the issue it always ran good started good there was a increasingly louder tick like most 5.4 But it wasn’t extreme also I immediately turned the vehicle off the vehicle does still start and turn on but I have not done so because I don’t wanna screw anything else up if I can help it
A penny for your thoughts?
If I post this in the wrong forums , I apologize new to it.

A 2003 model 5.4 does not have cam phasers. That’s what’s in store for a 2005-later Expedition.
If the engine skips time, you’ll have misfires at a minimum. If it skips time enough, valves meet pistons and your engine is a boat anchor.
I would have not ignored that tick. Some may call it normal, but it’s not acceptable. I’ve never had an engine make obviously irksome ticks. I’ll live with that fact. Anyway, in your case, it would be nice to trace that down. Some valvetrain wear would cause some rough running as well.

Tucked up
Yeah I know I fumbled that one but to my defense I Had thought the rocker arms had maybe heated up and created a flat spot in them. Therefore- creating the tick. Anyhow I just more then anything need a good step by step on pinpointing the problems. Do I need to take heads off? I
what exactly needs to be done moving forward and that’s fellas
