I just recently acquired a 75 f100 that had an aftermarket (crappy) floor shifter in it. the original setup was on the column but the column shifter handle has been removed. i tried to operate the column with a screwdriver and it turned the collar but the arm going to the shift linkage did not. is something supposed to go between the shifter handle down to the linkage?
Alright, slntn, I know you have a manual because of the wiring discussion. Look in the transmission section for the diagram of the linkage assembly. There is a single rod that connects the column shifter to the transmission linkage. There is an adjustable slide on the end of the rod for setting where the column is for each gear. Is the rod there?? You'll see it coming up out of the floor to the bottom of your column.
the only thing i have seen is an arm that comes out of the column under the hood that has a rod to connect to the tranny. but is there something that is supposed to run through the column from the handle to that arm?
Yes, as I recall it's a sleeve that runs the length of the column. Been years since I had a auto column apart. And sorry about the rod, forgot it was in the engine compartment and not in the cab, must be getting tired, lol. When you move the gear selector, that arm at the bottom of the column should move right along with it.
I hope someone else reads this thread soon then, because I am under the understanding of short of doing a complete teardown of the column and rebuild, you'll need to replace it. Probably more cost and time efficient to do that anyway. I'm sorry I can't help more, but I like manuals, and thus steer clear of automatic problems.
That would be the easiest way. Yes, disconnect the transmission rod, if you haven't already. Then disconnect the turn signal switch plug. Unbolt the column from the firewall. Take the support off from the dash and it will slide right out.
sounds like you have a floorshift because the shift tube broke. inside the column is a tube that runs from the shift collar to the shift lever. it has two tabs spotwelded to it that index the collar and lever. one of these has probably torn or broken off. it can be welded back together if you have the part but it requires a full teardown of the column. and just fair warning: buying a working one does not guarantee anything as they can break at any time. i know because we had a good used one in a parts truck and swapped it as it was easier than fixing the old one. the replacement didn't make it to the gas station! it was already broken but had enough friction to work a couple of times and then die. ended up fixing the old one anyway and then fixed the new one just because! LOL, hawkrod
Thanks, Hawk. Was waiting for someone to jar my memory about the internals on the column shift assembly. Took one apart years ago out of curiosity and couldn't remember.
junkyards and epay um er i mean ebay! there is no such thing as a complete new column as ford never sold an assembly, only the parts. there are also aftermarket columns for street rods but that is probably more work than simply repairing what you have. hawkrod
