I have been given conflicting information on the Excursion....I want to tow a TT and I was trying to decide what I need to tow it with.....I have a terry quantum with a dry weight of 7300 and a gross of 9600. the hitch is 900 lbs..I have a wife and 4 kids (combined weight 650 lbs) I know the 6.0 L PSD has more pull..But i also know it is much heavier...Some people have been telling me that I should get the V10 with a 4.3 rear axle ratio even though the mpg will be worse...can anyone help me with this info
I test drove both the V-10 and the 6.0 PSD before buying a new X with the 6.0.
The V-10 just did not seem to have anywhere near the grunt of the 6.0. I have towed my 28' TT w/ a 14' slide and a loaded weight of 7500# with the 6.0 and it is like it is not even there.
The other big reason to go with the PSD is to get the 5 speed Torqshift tranny. In the tow/haul mode it feels like you are driving a stick the way it holds the gears on the way up and downshifts to help slow you when stopping. Best transmission I have ever experienced.
I've owned both. Had an '01 F250 4x4 crewcab with V-10. It had the power to pull my 9,500lb fifth wheel, but several things I have noticed have made me, IMHO, glad that I upgraded to the exact same truck in an '03 model but with the 6.0L diesel. First thing I noticed was soooo much better mpg, especially when towing. On 3 trips with the trailer with the 6.0L, I'm averaging a computed 12.1 mpg. Now my old V10 got 11.8 WITHOUT the trailer and around 7 mpg with the trailer. Next thing I noticed was that the new 6.0L with the new tranny, the truck cruises much better. I live in Texas and my V10 hated overpasses. Would kick in and out of OD and make me diable OD (didn't have tow/haul function on '01 truck). The 6.0L diesel just keeps on cruising. Last trip I actually set the cruise control at 75 for over 90 miles - unbelievable towing machine. Other major thing I noticed was that at cruising speed when towing, the diesel is actually quieter because it stays in OD and only turns +- 2,200 rpms while the V10 turned around 3,000 rpms.
The better towing advantages of the diesel is the only real reason I changed trucks. These are my observations having owned both. Hope it helps in your descision.
