Ring and Pinion Gear Pattern

I’m not sure if this is the correct spot to post this but I’m changing my first ring and pinion. The axle is an 8.8 out of my 1986 Bronco and I’m installing a set of Ford Racing 4.10 gears. I installed the pinion re-using the factory shim and installed the carrier re-using the factory shims in the factory location. I loaded the carrier with a pry bar while a buddy spun the pinion both directions for me. This is the pattern I got. Is this okay to send or will more or less shim be required? Thanks in advance!

The pinion depth looks too deep and the carrier needs to shim away from the pinion. It's very hard to see the pattern using the Prussian blue. For a trail rig I would run it, for street use I would be more concerned. Seeing the Lincoln lock tells me this is a trail rig.

Yes I agree it is hard to see with the blue. The gears didn’t come with any compound and all my local part store had was the blue. It is a trail rig but it does see a little pavement driving (too and from local trails).

You can try a little white grease in another spot to see what that looks like.

I was thinking the pinion needed to go deeper as it looks to be riding to the outside of the ring gear teeth but that's me.

Okay so today I went out to the shop and messed with it a bit more. I tried to use white grease like recommended (Comp assembly lube) but it wouldn’t show me anything so I disassembled everything it cleaned it up really good. Reassembled it again with the stock shims just like it was. Checked back lash almost 1,000 times and got a good solid .010 backlash which falls in the green for go area (.008-.012) per Ford Racing instructions. I applied a much lighter, even coat of the marking compound with a brush this time. Loaded it with a pry bar and had a buddy spin it both directions. This time I got a MUCH better patter laid out on the gears. What do you fellas think? From studying the charts found online it looks pretty dang good in my opinion. Even on both the coast and drive side.

Just saying, if you have doubts, call a local transmission shop and ask them if you could bring it by and have them check it out for a small fee.

Better safe then sorry. Here on the internet we can tell you anything you want to hear, but we're not ones that have to pay to fix a issue...
