2007 vs 2008 Front Axle Differences

I have a Dana 60 I got to convert my 99 truck. The Axle Bill of Materials (BOM) is 2008007-1. When I look that up it corresponds to 2007-2008 Ford Front Axles. I always see reference to 2005-2007 front axles, then 2008-2010. So I surmise there is a difference between the 2007 and 2008.

Was there a change in rotor size or calipers?

Anyone know a solid way to determine if it is an 07 or 08 axle?

I think the year break is more a body style change than axle change, I know a few things that changed over the years.

First is the sway bar link, 05, 06 and maybe 07 had the eye and stud, then it changed to eye and eye.

The knuckle also changed, the earlier ones didn’t have the hole in the bottom to access the lower ball joint nut as the later years did, I think this was a 08 build date change, my brother has an 08 built in 07 and it doesn’t have the hole.

@ifrythings

It would make sense that it would be a change from the knuckle out since Dana has the same BOM for 07 and 08. I would think that a change from the knuckle out would mean that it was parts that Ford added to the axle assembly (or provided to Dana during assembly), but the axle housing built by Dana is the same.

You mention the hole in the bottom of the knuckle. Your photo from Rock Auto refers to a 2006. But it does refer to the wide frame, which I think may mean dually??

Did the brake calipers or rotors change?

The extended brake lines that are sold by various vendors are 05-07 then 08-10.

All the parts for the axle,excluding the brakes, are Dana parts. The whole thing is designed and built by Dana based on Ford's required specs such as track width and mounting provisions.

According to rockauto 07 and 08 4wd srw uses the same front rotor. but on car-part when searching for a used axle there's a year split between 07 and 08. It could just be that sway bar link mount?

That hole in the knuckle seems like a really bad design, seems like it would greatly compromise it's strength, especially under more extreme use. I wonder if the older solid knuckles swap over.

According to Rock Auto the two use the same caliper as well. The sway bar is definitely different, but the axle itself is the same. So far, the only difference I can find is the brake hoses.
