ATS TURBO?

Hey y’all my question is what ATS turbo are y’all running on the IDIs. I’ve seen multiple videos of guys running them but could never tell what the exact model description/ number is. From what I’ve seen they sound really nice and have a spool around lower RPMs. The stock Garrett turbo just isn’t cutting it for me. I tow a lot and just want better performance.

Any thoughts/ ideas I appreciate it in advanced.

If you mean stock as in the factory turbo that Ford offered for like a year, than you have an ATS turbo... ATS designed the Factory IDI turbo, Ford just tweaked a few things (for the worse..)
The stock turbo is almost identical to the ATS 093. Ford smashed and severely restricted the downpipe, and changed the name on the filter body. Also there was a slightly different setup for the oil feed.

I gotcha so then what's the deal with these guys that have this turbo and it sounds very after market.

If this is the case what's a better turbo than stock. I have my eyes on the RandD stage 4 setup with the intercooler. Eventually I'd like to go this route but I just don't have the $4,600 to spend on it right now.

as tec god noted, the ats 093 has a 3" dp which is what i have.

it took me a long time to learn that difference which is significant.

i have 4" straight exhaust side dump before the axle so i can hear a nice whistle.

i am having work done on my truck now getting studs, cam, heads, moose jr pump, bb code injectors, a rebuilt turbo with a wicked wheel and hoping to push the boost up to 15.

i was at 8 before and hoping the whistle is louder along with the performance!

good luck on ur adventure

Might be a bit late or out of the budget but wes at classic diesel designs modifies all kinds of idi turbos for way more flow than a wicked wheel, he also some some bolt on replacement options as well as some bolt on mods.

I just looked and noticed he's also modifying banks and earlier ats turbos too.

The 093 systems had a 3" turbo outlet housing plus total 3" exhaust system. ATS with their R & D found that there was no benefit to a 4".

Louder whistle?? I installed one of the first 093 systems (in '93) before ATS got their CARB approval and their original turbo whine was so bad it would make my neighbor's dogs howl when I came down the dirt road. Idling through a parking lot was embarrassing. I talked to the owner of ATS at the time and he said they were aware of the problem and were perfecting a quieter straight through muffler. He sent me one on an exchange basis, still got the part number of the replacement.

Thank you. The previous owner ran the stock exhaust to the end of the cab and then crimped a 4 inch straight pipe which I made it into a downturn with a 5 inch tip. My motor is rebuilt to turbo standard and bored 30 over with head studs and just recently I got the baby moose injection pump with stage one injectors which adds a decent amount of power from the stock set up. My turbo has been rebuilt as well still running stock compressor and exhaust wheels and I’m pushing 8-10lbs. As far as I know I still have the stock downpipe where it’s crammed underneath the cab with all the original manifold piping including the donut pipe which I’d like to get rid of somehow and run it like the 7.3 power stroke piping along with the banks 3 inch downpipe which hopefully would increase performance and decrease EGTs and hopefully add a nice whistle to it like yours.

I'm not much of a Turbo fan for the IDI ... IF I was gonna do a turbo I would go either electric or VGT.

Need me to fab you up a kit

I could definitely use your help to make an actual controller that could use some sensors to change housing size on the fly..

I think I made mention of using DRV101 in the past, I have used that method to control the E4OD in a manual mode as it can read a TPS and it can control a Variable Vacuum Valve such as those proportional valves that can control an EGR valve for the C6 Transmission to run the modulator. SO I think it could be used on some VGT turbos that use Vacuum control.
the simple method is this

HOWEVER the above does not consider Partial opening or closing, where monitoring TPS would and it doesn't watch a changing boost pressure either that might be handy. BUT down and dirty it will work. At least for turbos controlled by Vacuum.......

there are some that use a Stepper Motor to control where vanes are positioned this type could be better controlled using Arduino, you could have various sensors to monitor performance.

Some use Oil and I haven't really looked into that style as it seems to get a bit more complex.

Since I haven't played with one, I'm just not sure what Parameters you really want...but I totally understand the aspects of how one could control it.

BTW I still have 2 of these old turbos that have been sitting in buckets of Diesel for months now and will still not Free up....they are rusted tight from many years of sitting in the weather.... I think maybe Electrolysis cleaning will be a last hope for them.

I think we might need to start a new thread.... something like "Monitor an IDI engine with Arduino"

with something like that we might be able to discuss various sensors to use to monitor the engine and how to code that.... with that kind of platform we could expand into using that data to control external devices ..... it doesn't have to be arduino it could be RasberryPI or other controller.

I seem to remember one of our members used Arduino for his gauges ...was it McRob ?

I write a lot of code for CNC that might be adaptable .... most generic routines are already published.

I'm not sure how much intrest it would have as most just want the instant "FIX" that seems pretty elusive

I'm pretty sure that was McRobb..I remember seeing it in one of his videos.

Cool thread idea also. My idea was to use an rpm, boost, and back pressure sensor as well as the brake wire for auto exhaust brake. I'm pretty sure that's all I'd need.

I just have no idea how to type on the keyboard in a way that makes things happen

I hear that loud and clear.... I just found an IPOD Touch 4th gen in my couch ....it was dead but I got a charge adapter and now it is working ...I managed to figure out the 4 Digit passcode to unlock it finally after I was locked out for 15 minutes..... I lost my wedding band and thought it was in the couch.... but alass only found an IPOD

and my fingers are too Fat to type on the IPOD ..... the point is I'm not sure how to go on saying what we should do to control a turbo since I don't have one to know what to do either.

BUT maybe some input like what you just gave would help.

I don't remember how to use code functions in vBulletin since Internet brands bought them out I haven't used it much... we dumped all our vBulletin stuff after Internet Brands took possession

our major issue was with Cloudflare being not secure...

the version they use here is customized and many of the old commands do not work.

.
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
    alert("Hello world!");
//-->
</script>
