I bought a powermaster starter for my for fe 390
I know this motor. it was my dads. Stock crank .. original block .. 1976 f150. new pioneer ring gear.
ring gear is .8 inch from engine block. Powermaster starter only engages to about .815 inch maybe a bit more. Ground all the teeth off the front edge of my ring gear too.
is my ring gear not supposed to .8 inch from block?
also fyi powermaster say it is only supposed to engage 1/2 way into ring gear.
meanwhile my stock ford starter FULLY engages the ring gear. Oh ya i forgot he also said that the ford starter shouldn't engage that far.
While i agree 1/2 engage should be enough , these do not work ..
Stock starter Works great by the way!!
Im just curious about ring gear distance from block.
The starter should engage the ring gear fully. You are not the first to report the issue with Power Master. The last person who had this issue went with a High Torque mini starter from DB electric and did not have anymore issues.
Interesting, I had some minor fitment issues with my power master that are common but that thing works like a champ, I usually cant get my hand off the key fast enough before the engine fires up. FE also.
