Getting a sct livewire that has an egt thermocouple I know the best place is to put it in the exhaust manifold but I seen a kit that looks a whole lot easier but its after the turbo is that ok or should I put the effort or money to have it placed in the exhaust manifold. I'm mainly worried about metal shavings going through the turbo
You definitely need to be pre-turbo. You can loose hundreds of degrees across the turbo, and the VGT only complicates things. Most people put it on the driver-side manifold bottom. There's a nice spot you can get a drill in easy from the bottom.
I recently installed mine and did a bunch of research about metals shavings before doing it. There was a bunch of threads about the shavings from the 03-04 period when the 6.0 first came out but I couldn't find any instances of someone creating issues with the VGT turbo from drilling the hole.
I ended up drilling mine with the engine off. Took it really slow at the end when I was breaking thru to try and keep the shavings down. Stuck a small hose from my vacuum up the hole to see if I could suck anything, but I dont' think it did much. So far no issues. the VGT appears to be working just as it did before.
BTW, the manifold is much thicker than you would expect. Plenty of meat for cutting in the threads.
I was kind of worried when I drilled and tapped the hole in my manifold. I don't know if any little pieces remained in the manifold, it's been years since and I never had a problem. I put my sensor on the bottom of the drivers side manifold.
I've tapped many manifolds for EGT probes. I try to clean out the hole before I break through, then put a shop vac over it to suck out any shavings. Then I usually start the engine to try to blow out anything left over. Never had any issues.
