trying to replace the starter and running into an issue disconnecting the electrical wires from the starter itself. Feels like my 8mm socket is grabbing onto the small nut on the solenoid, but is not loosening or moving at all even though the ratchet is turning. Ive tried smaller sockets or extractor socket and nothing - any advice?
Can you get the other wire(s) off and drop the starter out of there to where you can work on it a little better? Alternatively, you can pull the fender liner and get a little better view of things. I don't know how much wire you have to play with buy you might have to cut that end off and affix another one.

yep i can get the other wires off, ill try to get the mounting bolts off this evening and drop it see if I can get a pair of vise grips or something on there. just confusing why the socket is spinning and not grabbing onto the nut ya know
I haven’t had the starter off my 7.3 but imagine you’ll need to use a wrench to hold a jam nut behind the wire while removing the exposed nut.
didnt think about slipping a wrench on behind the socket - will give this a whirl in a bit. really need this thing to fire up and get outta this parking lot - just giving me the click of the solenoid so im hoping itll do the trick
I just replaced my starter, that little wire is much easier to work on with the starter not mounted. There should be plenty of slack in the wire.
I got the starter down and still can’t grip onto the nut behind to prevent spinning - is it easier to cut it and crimp on a new connector instead of fight with it? Anything I need to know when cutting or adding a new connector?
I'd snip the wire and crimp on a new end. When fixing it make sure the wire is clean and use a crimp that has heat shrink, or a separate bit of heat shrink. That area is exposed and needs to be protected.
The starter is junk right?
You could try to bust the bolt out of the starter giving you more room to work on the backside once it’s free. Vice grips may get it then.

Just a thought.
I suppose it doesn’t matter if I rough it up but I was thinking I’ll just go over and cut the wire strip it back a bit and put a new connector on w heat shrink and hope it does the trick. I got some 10-12 gauge connectors and am guessing some marine shrink tubing should do just fine - if I need something more professional please chime in someone

It doesn't sound like a bad plan but I'm pretty stubborn so I'd give it my best to get that one off of there. Can you grab the end of the stud with vise grips and turn the nut? If you bugger the threads at the end up too bad you could cut the end off with a dremel drill and get the nut off.

That's what I'd do. In fact, it's exactly what I did. I replaced the terminal just because.

starts up again guys, new ultima starter from oreily...took in the old one and the guys swapped it under warranty thankfully. Clipped the wire and stripped it back a quarter inch or so and crimped on a waterproof heat shrink connector and went on no problems!
