I've had my truck for a month or so and one of my family members was driving it in 4wd during heavy weather going about 25mph. The truck was then moved into the parking space. For whatever reason put into N then 4L, then back into 2H without letting the truck roll at all to disengage/engage 2H. Now whenever the truck is shifted into a drive gear such as R or D there is a horrible grinding noise and has to be played with to even move. For now the Transfer Case manual selector is in the N position with the hubs now unlocked and the truck in park. Is the transfer case shot, or does it need to be toyed with until it grinds itself back into 4WD? It is a BW4407 with manual hubs and selector. Hoping to not have to replace the transfer case but I will have to if it is needed. Engine is a 460 V8 with an auto trans.
Sounds more like a linkage issue than bad xfer case. Shifting from N to 4L to 2H can be done with the truck sitting still, I do it regularly when moving my truck around the yard. If by heavy weather you mean the winter crap recently, maybe some icy slush is frozen up around the linkage, keeping it from fully engaging.
The lever you move near the transmission hump goes through the floorboards, and connects to the transfer case, visible by crawling under the truck.
The transmission will have no effect on what you do with the transfer case lever. the transfer case is strictly mechanical, unless you have a push button control.
It sounds like the transfer case is between gears or the ( manual? ) hubs are not completely disengaged.
You can shift between 2H, 4H, N & 4L while stopped. There is no need for the truck to roll to come out of one gear and go into another.
By manual I mean you have to get out to lock them, and I believe you are correct, it got stuck and we were able to put it back into 2H. Takin it to the shop this weekend to get linkage and fluid checked for any evidence of metal pieces.
