New Alternator Questions

So the alternator on my 1990 f150 xlt lariat is 31 years old now, and definitely due for a replacement. It still works but its time is near. I bought a new one and figured i could use the same plugs for the wires as the old one. When I took the new one out of the box I see that it already has the plug inside and tells me to crimp and heat shrink it to the old wires. Can I just take this plug out and still use the old one or is this step a necessity?

Replacing that connector/pins is absolutely necessary. Fire hazard. Should have upgraded to a 3G.

Well, i still am able to return it for a 3G. Regardless, how should i go about replacing the plug, do i cut the wires that are already in the truck and then attach them to these wires on the new alternator?

I’d return that one and get a 3g. the 3g doesn’t use that connector

So do I have to rewire anything if I were to get a 3G, or do i just use the one connector and not the fire hazard one? I have no experience with wiring so I am hesitant to do any. I will if it’s necessary but I really am unsure how to go about it. Youtube videos make it seem like I might have to grind the place where the alternator sits as well when upgrading, another thing I have no experience in.

you can either use your old harness, try to find a junkyard 3g harness, or just buy a new connector online, but you will have to splice a couple wires either way. it’s not a big deal though

i guess it isnt much to do but for my first time its a little daunting. After watching a few videos on swapping I still an unsure what to rewire. It seems like the larger plug (fire plug) will no longer be needed, but I dont know if any of those wires get spliced to the other plug or not.

the vast amount of info out there on the swap as well as the seemingly different ways people have done it can be a little confusing/intimidating, but it’s actually pretty simple. here’s a couple simple pics of the 2g vs 3g wiring.

they both use the same ASI plug, but the stator “S” wire on the 3g has its own connector, vs the 2g which has the stator wire on the flaming connector. if you use your old harness, that wire needs to be spliced to a stator connector (can be bought online.) the 3g has a stud on the back for charging, so you are correct you’ll need to run a new charging wire and leave your old ones as they are insufficient. the “A” wire of the ASI plug runs along the factory charge wires so you’ll just have to rerun it back to the charging stud on the 3g. run your charge wire with a mega fuse and you’re good to go. hopefully this isn’t too confusing

So if I understand correctly I can use the same wires as the fire plug, but just have to attach one of them to a separate plug. does this still put the system at a higher risk of fire because its the same wires or was the spliced wire previously the hazard, but since it will now be spliced there is no more hazard?

no, just leave them disconnected. I believe they’re still at risk of overload

okay, I think im still not sure which is ASI plug on the alternator, I think I understand how the theoretical circuit works but I cant quite bring it to reality. In my original post, are those the ASI wires or the fire ones?

So in the 3G alternator that whole plug would not even exist then. For a moment I was considering an aftermarket 2G with increased amps but I guess that is exactly what makes them ignite after thinking about it. So if I want increased amps, (which I will need for getting new speakers and aftermarket lights in the future) I simply have to swap to 3G.

correct, 3g’s use a charge wire with a ring terminal as they have a stud on the back for charging. they don’t use a connector
