Its a '74 F-100 Ranger on the inside. I'm trying to figure out how to replace the heater core. Chilton's tells me I have to "unbolt" the heater assembly and lower it through the bottom side of dash. Unfortunately they lumped together 1966-1977 vehicles under one diagram which is not the same.
I don't have AC.
How do you drop this "heater assembly" out of the dash, and where the Sam Hell are those bolts? It be getting real cold up this way. I'm given 'er all I got, Captain....but the vent door is off, the heater switches are disconnected, and the Warp Drive is backin' up into the toilets!
They are not bolts, they are studs protruding through the firewall with nuts on them. It unbolts from the engine compartment, then you pull it out from under the dash. Good luck.
take out the passenger side vent panel the glove box liner go to the engine side of the firewall unbolt the heater blower bolt then look just above the middle of the tranny bellhousing will be a lone 7/16 nut on a stud thats the one that holds the heater box in unbolt it go back into the cab disconect the heater cables need a really shot phillips screw driver for this there might be a dash brace to remove the it come out with a little coaxing and some swearing watch out for anti freeze on your floor from the heater core
Hey i did this not too long ago on my '79 F-250 shouldnt be much different. First of all this is if you have no A/C like me. There are 3 bolts on the firewall that you have to get to from the engine bay. Two by the blower motor, and one directly behind the engine. After you unbolt the last bolt you will see that the assembly should drop down. To make it easier on yourself you should take out the glove compartment and vent. Hope this helps, let me know how it turns out.
Ok, calm down, everthing will be ok!
There are 3 nuts on the firewall, they are from the center on over to the passenger side near the blower motor.
Remove the two cables before you try to pull the box. You will have to unhook the wires to the blower motor as well.
It is a tight fit, but with some wiggling and finese, it will come right out.
Try to salvage all of the rubber seals and foamy gasket type stuff as possible.
Well yes the glove box liner is already out. The cables and wiring harnesses are disconnected, and yes the passenger side vent is completely removed.
Now the only problem is its too dark and too late, so I'll give it a whirl after work tomorrow. I'll be looking for those 3 bolts on the outside, and the one on the inside. Thanks again.
There isn't one on the inside. They are nuts on the outer firewall, you'll see the studs sticking out. Like said, one about in the middle of the firewall and the other two are by the blower motor.

One thing that helped me was to remove the dash bolt to the right of the glovebox. It gives you a little extra movability when you remove the assembly.
