1966 Custom Cab long bed modification/build thread
The only way I could sell another old vehicle to my wife was to find one that just needed little things here and there, not a full restoration. The thing that drew me to the Fords was the amount of restoration parts and plentiful used parts at reasonable prices!I started looking around on Craigslist at other brands and found this well taken car of 66' F100 about 20 minutes away. Truck has the 352 FE with the 3 on the tree transmission. The seller had mis-listed it as a Ford 100 and it had been listed for a number of days before I found it. I called the seller, who had just had open heart surgery and talked to him about it...it was his friends truck who had died and he didn't have room to store it and he wasn't really into the whole truck thing as he was more of a street rod guy. He was on some pretty stiff pain meds and he didnt write down my phone correctly... I waited for a call all next day and was on pins and needles all day. I called him again and he wrote down my number again and said he would give it to my son to have him show me the truck. At the risk of tipping my hand, I told him I was motivated to come look at it and that I had cash. The son called me the next day and we set up a time to look at it that night. I drove over there so fast that night I think i was floating the valves on my 4Runner

I looked at it and we made a deal with the sellers son. The truck is pretty straight with some slight floor board rust but i will fix that. Someone has riveted some sheetmetal into the cab floors but that is fixable... The cab corners, drip rails and doors/fenders are super solid! Someone left leaves in the bed so it has some rust up in front of the bulkhead where the bed meets the upright of the bed right behind the cab but i can fix that. Best part was, it ran and drove and my wife said it "looked cute" so that means spending money on it is easier to justify when both parties like it
I get people asking to buy the truck all the time but it's not for sale. I enjoy it and use it for my home repair projects. In the summer I drive this nearly every day.Things I have fixed or repairs I have done since I have bought it-
-replace all rubber fuel lines and fuel pump
-replace heater control valve and all coolant
-rebuild the 2100 carburetor
-tune up including wires, cap, rotor, plugs (truck does have the electronic ignition conversion already)
-replace rear wheel cylinders, wheel seals, rear differential fluid
-Future plans/ mods-
-rebuild the doors with all new weatherstrip/anti rattle rubber/new window regulators (rubber from Dennis Carpenter)
-reseal back window
-have windshield replaced
-reseal all the cab seam sealer
-polish paint and protect it with some patina sauce
-fix bed rust behind cab and fix cab floor repairs
-install 73-79 disc brake swap and install power brakes and a dual reservoir master cylinder
- hopefully at some point rebuild/reseal the engine or maybe swap in a 390...who knows ... engine is still working fine but does leak a little bit of oil but not horrible.
I am not super knowledgeable on this truck in terms of the options it left the factory with and how rare it is? It isn't a ranger package but it does have things like the electronic washer squirter, emergency flasher, tool box and of course all the custom cab items like the deluxe heater, gauges, chrome etc.... All in all I think it is a pretty solid Pacific Northwest truck... I get complements on it all the time.

In terms of paint protection, I think i will polish the paint to remove the oxidization and then apply this patina sauce. I have heard of guys putting on boiled linseed oil as well...I don't want to clear it now, but wouldn't be opposed to doing that in the future. I think I will clear the bed inside just so the surface rust doesn't grow.

I am wondering if anyone has any nice window regulators ? I need a couple for my truck... I cant even buy new ones, they are all sold out... When I say nice, I am not really referring to the paint, I more mean mechanically sound that can be repainted....I have a couple but the window crank drive screws are slightly loose.
I just talked to a local guy who parts the slicks out and he said he has another truck he is picking up on saturday. Maybe that truck will have good regulators ?
