Is this a back fire and should I be worried? No response on my thump thread so maybe if I ask it this way. Cruising 60mph - 80mph my 2018 (115,000 mi.) truck is making an occasional thump or dull muffled pop. Sounds like a backfire coming from the engine and usually on the right side. No change in performance or boost. It happens mainly when I use cruise control on level road at 60+mph but not always. At first I thought it was the 1" thick rubber bed rug being picked up on the corner and then falling back down so I removed the rug; Still get the thump. There's nothing obviously loose in the front like a flopping panel or anything. I don't know whether to be alarmed or not. Anyone had this before?
Check the front wheel well liner to make sure that's not loose and flapping around. Seems like if it was a misfire at highway speed, I'd hope you'd end up with some sort of code (could be wrong though).
Maybe the torque converter or something in the tranny? I had a 2012 F150 that had a tranny problem that felt like a misfire. Never figured it out after several trips to the dealer. It started at around 15,000 miles and was much worse when I traded it at 60,000 or so.
Do you have OEM front mud flaps? Mine would flex and make a thumping sound.. They also had about a 4" - 5" tear that let them flex more at speed.
Don't have them or the thumping anymore.
No CEL but I haven't actually pulled the codes. On my short list of to do's but like I said no performance issues yet, just an annoyance I can't figure out.
Diesels do not backfire.
Probably a simple turbo huff of spinning ultra fast under hard throttle and then a cut off of exhaust mass from lifting.
They all do it.
Turns out the dealership replaced #1 glow plug before I bought the truck and did a very poor job of reinstalling the liner. Replaced and tightened the fasteners and the thump went away.
