Best Fuel

I'm looking for the best fuel possible for my 1978 F150 Ranger XLT
351M c-6 auto trans no emissions control on engine whatsoever, ( non egr block)

anyways, emissions is not an issue where i live so here it goes
I run ch**ron 93octane gas in my truck at all times and once i tried the chev**n 87 octane gas and when i killed her she ran for a few seconds, kill it in drive, a quick fix. I have put low lead avgas (blue gas) mixed with the 93 octane and experience a trend in performance i cannot acheive elsewhere, is there an even better way to get a more , how should i put this, powerful fuel?

btw, 16* BTDC with new dizzy, wires, elec. ign box, plugs and new stock carb if this helps.

Go back to the 87.

Anything higher in Octane is a complete waste of money.
Please read this:

http://www.shellstations.com/answerb...vention_10.htm

Once you have nothing but 87 in the tank* Re-Time * that engine.

Remember one thing though.
The plastic timing gear & chain wear out and cause problems with timing on high miler engines.

Slow the timing a little and slow the idle back to factory specs. It was designed to run on 87 octane, anthing higher and you are wasting alot of money and ch^%%on is getting rich off of you. 93 octane is for high compression engines such as the SHO Taurus and supercharged applications like the Cobra Mustangs and Lightnings.

"Q. Who needs which unleaded?
A. We estimate that about 70 percent of the cars that require unleaded gas will run satisfactorily on regular unleaded. The rest, however, will knock, and some will also run on after the key is turned off. They should try a higher octane unleaded. (See below for explanation of knock and run-on.)

The thing to remember is this: If a premium unleaded helps your car run better, buy it. Otherwise, don't. It costs more to make and uses more energy in the refining process. So stick to a lower octane unleaded if you possibly can. "

Not a waste all the time. I have to run higher octane in my (stock)'77 400 and my '79 f-350 w/'71 429 (modified). My 429 is 10.5:1 CR, and my 400 runs on and pings on the cheap stuff.

As far as the original question goes, is the motor stock? If so, your really not going to gain much by increasing the octane more. You can only advance the timing so much before you start losing HP/Torque.

Yeah, that's what I said.. Your 400 must have alot of carbon buildup in the cylinders or your carb is too lean.
The 429 was built to run on 92 octane.

Hmm, ill reset the air/fuel mixture again with my vacuum gauge, the timing factory spec is 14* i got it at 15.5ish, and the factory idle is 650 which i have it at, it just runs horribly on 87, morning start ups are worse, she coughs and pings and is really sluggish. I dont know what makes my app different but its a night and day difference between 87 and 93.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the 400. It burns ok and I've ran a lot of cleaner through it, but it doesn't help. It only has 40,102 original miles on it. I'm sure there is some 20+ years old build up in there giving me trouble, maybe. Oh well, it's going to be a boat anchor as soon as it's replacement is ready, a 460.

BTW you must have been answering the question the same time as me last night. I opened it up when it was just Millions post there and when I posted, well....

Amazing isn't it. Two people miles apart can be doing the same thing at the same time!

If Amaco regular is availble in your area, use it. I've got the best results from it.

If you think your fuel system is dirty run a tank of premium through it once. It really made a difference in mine.

For how much premium cost nowadays it would be nice to get 102octane like we were back in the late 60's. Too bad that will never happen.
