Factory (pruned) harness. VSS off the rear axle (Sterling 10.25); snagged a PSOM from junkyard — stashed behind the dash along with the OEM LCD and little red button.
Aftermarket electronic speedo, calibrated to the PSOM output. Also included OEM OD switch. Aftermarket shifter (Sidewinder).

Thumbs up

Scndsin, I recall your advice was extremely helpful back during the build whenever I'd pop over to this forum from the '48-'56 forum to figure out this 5.8 drivetrain install…

A few pix of how it all turned out:

Up until now, it has been trouble-free! (Knock on wood…) Lots of attention on the road, for sure, and super fun to drive.

That is one super nice build. Would love to have something like that myself any day.

Love the necking-***, the old/new mix interior & the fabbed utility deck & storage out back.

Bet you get a lot of WTF when you pop the hood.

Thanks…

Well fluid is good (actually a tad high on the dipstick). Guess I'll attempt the drive cycle test wwhite posted tomorrow (before Wednesday's snow). Then I suppose I could pop open the EEC this weekend and take a look at the capacitors.

Followed the steps in that transmission drive test … of course truck didn’t exhibit any symptoms the entire time (), so no new codes afterward.

Guess I’ll dig into EEC this weekend and take a peek.

Thumbs down D'OH!

Hmmm… looks like a bad (leaky) capacitor — again.

I already replaced this PCM just shy of 2 years ago after finding this in the original donor box:

So today I opened the replacement and lo and behold it appears to be the same capacitor!

I remember at the time of replacing this in '19 I read about some people actually just replacing the capacitor itself for less than a couple of bucks instead of buying an entire PCM; has anybody had any luck doing that?

Thankfully (knock on wood) the truck still runs for now, so I put it back together and figure out next steps.

Carburetors don't have these problems…

I don't have a steady hand, some folk do. There has been a member here recently that would do them gratis.

I paid these guys to do my original A9L from my GT, lifetime warranty if I don't break the seal:

If you know a TV/Stereo/repair shop or somebody who does the work, it's only 3 caps.

Thumbs down UGHH!

Had a 20% discount as well as some "rewards" credit at a local auto parts store (Autozone), and was happy to see they offered a remanufactured PCM with the proper matching code for my 5.8/E4OD… which turned out to be just a bit cheaper than sending it away to be repaired (and no down time for the truck).

Replaced it yesterday and initially thought it solved my problem, but sadly today the "surging" happened again (let off the throttle to coast, and RPMs will rev slightly, three times before settling). So far no issue with the TC lockup at least.

So… what else could be causing this "bucking" if not the PCM, or, what are the odds that this refurbished one isn't quite right? Do I send it back and try again, or is something else the underlying problem?

I suggest posting at EFIDynoTuning Forum - Categories, and asking the question.
Getting a straight answer would be a lot more beneficial than guessing the problem.
EFIDynotuning is a tuning site, and if its a problem that has happened before, you'll get the answer there within a day.

No worries … post 16, above.
VSS from Sterling 10.25 axle.
You think that could be the culprit?

I'd pull the sensor out & see if it had any damage or metal particles on the magnet just for sheets & giggles. Costs nothing.

Have you checked the electrical connections on the trans, make sure they are clean and no corrosion.
Do you have a transmission cooler or a transmission temperature gauge?

Being in a '52, I'm sure its used to burn some rubber. Do you do burn outs in drive?

Did you rebuild the transmission, or install the pressure regulator assembly and the TCC function that is in the pump, as recommended a few years ago?
Not to hijack the OP thread but being I am still pretty new to the forum could you elaborate what this does??

Thanks for the lead… based on a reply there I replaced the IAC valve and (knock on wood): no more surging!
