Why are they worth more when they are worthless for anything useful?
Because people tend to think that they look cooler. This is the 21st century, so form is way more important than mere function...
X2 on 138,000 miles, look at how crooked those odometer digits appear. Usually, on an under-100,000 mile example, the odometer digits will be very straight and lined up - unless it's very close to rolling over a large increment of miles, like thousands or tens of thousands.
No apparent pictures of, or even mention of, the engine...
Why are they worth more when they are worthless for anything useful?
Because most customers purchased long box pickups to haul more capacity and tow more hence the higher number of vehicles produced. Inversely. however, I believe there are even less "Flare side" trucks produced than the "style side short box but you can't give those away. Odd
Short Box Dents just look cool anyways
The short box is like the 2 door car vs the grandpa 4 door . when I was a kid everyone wanted a short box and that no doubt is part of why less are still around. high school kids wrecked them , rolled them and basically destroyed them.
Don't get caught up in the " that's too far away " mentality. if it cost $1000 -$1500 to ship a totally rust free rig to your door how far will that go replacing sheet metal ? buying rust free is an absolute no brainer for me. there is a reason people pay big bucks to the dealers in the rust belt who buy rigs out west . you can do the same thing and save money by cutting them out of the transaction.
If that short box in CA was a higher trim package I'd probably make him an offer and take the drive down there to get it myself. that is the kind of project I look for I just don't need any more.
Cost me 1600 to ship my 73 f100 from ca to ny thinks it's 2500 miles. It was worth every penny because rust free does not truly exist here. Mine was not running a running vehicle is cheaper to ship.

good advice on cost to ship vs cost to fix rust repair!
Fact: The F100 can be more car like. The f250 never was a short bed for reason; it was a truck meant to do things. Makes no sense to me that you need it to be more than that.
I've bought vehicles at the GAA auction before. It can be hit or miss.
.
Obviously some work was done to make it look good. I'd look real hard around the drip rails and cab corners for any sign of rust popping up from under the paint. This could have been a quick paint job over bad prep. Also, a lot of people who sell there sell after they've driven their restoration around a few years and start seeing some evidence that something is popping back up. Check the mechanicals real good, do they match the niceness of the paint? Are there new bushings throughout the suspension? Look for things like that, that people will overlook in favor of making it look nice to sell.
.
Check the vin against what engine it should have come with, etc. It should sell for less if it isn't all original. Doesn't matter to me, but it does to some and that should bring the price down if not original.
.
Find a shipper before you go. All the shippers at the auction have ridiculous prices that are 4 times what you will find elsewhere.
It's not just the cost of rust repair. it's the enhanced value being rust free brings. if you ever resell it any savvy buyer will pay more for an all Ford sheet metal rust free vehicle than one with 200 patch panels and chinese repop parts .
Fords are MUCH less of a rust candidate than the square body chevys are. even around here they can have some rust but Fords almost never do. I bought a nice '77 swb 4x4 Silverado out of northern CA a couple years ago and I'd give anyone $500 if they could find a pinhole anywhere in it's original sheet metal. you just have to look for what you want in the right areas and be willing to ship it. rust is a choice and you can take it or leave it.
Upon reading the title of this thread my first thought was as soon as you get it painted park it in a Walmart parking lot and you'll have your first dent..
here is a place to go get those rust free classics "from California" and at least they are already halfway to the mid west. https://www.rustfreeclassics.com/
That guy has bought several rigs I was trying to get the owner to come down in price on. when he buys he just sends a check. but he ups the price so much he can afford to. he bought a '78 Dodge from a friend of mine , hauled it back there , tripled the price and sold it in less than a month.. crazy.
Nothing wrong with it that's just business. but I'd bypass him if it were me.
Wow that is crazy that is went for that much. Yes it was a nice truck, but I did not think it was $28,500 nice. I am sure there is one out there and hopefully not that much. I did a quick Search Tempest in NC.
