rear pumpkin is warm

I was under my truck today trying to figure out which rear end I had in it. I noticed the pumpkin was warm. I had just gotten back from a short trip, 6 miles, accross town and back. Never going over 40. Is this normal or is something in need of attention? I have a 02 F250SC PSD

You have a 10.5" rear end made by ford called the Sterling looks like the older 10.25 same housing with a bigger ring gear. The rear end under a hevey load can burn you 200 deg. + .
