Help!

Help!

I got a truck from a guy for 600 bucks 87 4.9 it missed and smoked, did compression test and had nothing on 3&4, pulled valve cover off and two push rods weren’t under the rockers so I put it all back together and ran good, drove it around in the parking lot and no problems, went inside the shop for a little while and came back out and truck was not running, thought it just ran out of gas because it wasn’t hardly any in it so I filled it up with gas and cycled key a little bit and went to start and wouldn’t fire up, checked to see if it had spark and nope it did not. Since then I’ve replaced ignition coil, ignition module and the pick up in the distributor. Still no fire! Any suggestions on what to test/check would be greatly appreciated!

Always check for ECM codes, those might point you in the right direction from the get go.

Do you have power up to the coil through one of the small wires that hook onto the coil, with the ignition switch turned ON? A test light works best to check this or if you have a multi-meter.

I tried checking the codes but the battery in the scanner was dead so I couldn’t and I keep for getting to get one and yes I have power going into the coil

You disassembled the distributor and replaced the pickup coil(PIP)? I would also check the connections on the parts I replaced. Unhook the spout connector(the thing you unhook to set the timing) and see if you have spark then.

Yes I did, and okay I will try that when I get back to the shop probably next Monday due to my area getting an ice storm at the moment but what exactly does that mean if it does have spark when I unhook it?

It takes the PCM controlling, the spark out, and if it fires with it out, next step would be remove PCM, and remove cover on PCM, and look for the dreaded bad capacitors, inside the PCM.

ohh okay I gotcha makes since, I will definitely try and hopefully keep my fingers crossed that that’s what my problem is!
